Marketing Update
Kia ora koutou,
here is your monthly update from the Library Marketing Group – enjoy đ
Facebook – Did you know that there are monthly UC wide Social Media meetings that talk about our different experiences and provides some tips and tricks from the UC Comms team? If you ever wanted to attend one of these sessions, let RÄ or Fiona know. For example one thing that was talked about at a recent meeting was data regarding social media use in NZ. This slide show is very useful: https://www.slideshare.net/wearesocial/digital-in-2018-in-oceania-part-2-east (Flick to slide 69 to get the UC-specific data). Also some interest stats, this year alone from 1st Jan we have had our FB posts reach 2,589,334 people and grown our number of ‘likes’ or followers by 1,143 people.
Insiders Guide – We are always looking for content to promote the Libraries and different areas within these that are for a student audience. Here is an example of the blogs that staff in the Library write – this one courtesy of Hannah https://blogs.canterbury.ac.nz/insiders/2018/09/07/pacific-languages-in-the-library/
Twitter – Did you know our Twitter underwent a rebranding initiative to become more targeted towards postgraduate students, academics and library professionals? Since adding a research flavour to the UC Twitter Account, we have seen a marked increase in followers (over 100) with 36% of the new followers being identifiable as UC academics or postgraduate students.
Library News – Its great to see more and more news popping up here! https://www.canterbury.ac.nz/library/uc-library-news/general/Â Did you also see Rod’s referral to our Library News for Te wiki?

Practising your 1/2 Price kawhe (coffee) in Te Reo
Kia ora koutou,
If you would like to have some practice with how to order your kawhe (coffees) in te reo, feel free to come to the Central Library workroom on level 2 at 3pm today (Wed 5th).  We will try to run another session this week before everything kicks off next week where if you order in te reo at any of the UCSA cafes, your kawhe is half price!

Final Salon Session – Wednesday 18th July
Join us for the last Salon session in this series and be sure to invite staff from other areas of the University to come participate.
What: Will the University Exist in 10 Years?
Surely after hundreds of years, we can do better than saying a degree âhelps you thinkâ or other generic crap. Â Isnât it time we used our collective wit and wisdom to spell out what undergraduate tertiary education does, and how it does it, without resorting to the managerial vocabulary and Eduspeak of âlearning outcomesâ, âtransferable skillsâ, and ‘communication skillsâ. Â Surely our grads can âframe a social or scientific problem from a variety of different approaches’ that we can talk to the students about in plain English.Â
And if we can write our goals  in plain English, doesnât that mean we need to rethink how we teach? Who needs lectures?  Do our formats for lectures and tutorials need to be as structured and regimented for undergraduates? If we have more structured goals, our practice could be much more flexible and  suited to the needs of students, since it will be clear what they have learnt. Â

INELI-Oceania and Pacific Libraries Summit Report back
Kia ora koutou,
In June I came back from Fiji as I am part of the INELI-Oceania cohort. This is a project of the Global Libraries initiative of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and something I have been part of and  passionate about for years.
The vision for the Summit was to bring together key regional stakeholders, library practitioners and INELI-Oceania innovators to advocate for the role of public libraries and librarians in society and to inspire a vision and agreement for collaborative and sustainable development of public library services in the Pacific.
Myself and a few others involved in this project will be doing a Staff Development Session for those interested later on, I just wanted to quickly pass on a few things here beforehand. There were a lot of great advocates who shared their learnings, including Global Libraries Director – Deborah Jacobs, IFLA President Elect – Christine Mackenzie and the First Lady of East Timor – Kirsty Sword GusmĂŁo.
The one that stayed with me the most though was by Sanjana Shrestha who as well as being the Country Director of READ Nepal, is also just an amazing human being! If you want to be inspired about Libraries changing lives, be sure to watch this.
Collective leadership and participation with indigenous matters: Redefining indigenous literacy
Kia ora koutou,
For those of you who don’t know, or haven’t had a chance to check it  out,  Te Paea wrote an article for the College & Research Libraries News (C&RL News).
It is the official news magazine and publication record of the Association of College & Research Libraries, which provide articles on the latest trends and practices affecting academic and research libraries.
Congratulations to her on the article and the thought provoking read.
