Telsig journal discussion group – Tues 25 Aug.

TELSIG are holding a new journal discussion group in Christchurch! So please join us on Tuesday 25th August, 5:30pm at CPIT, Room L202 (there will be signposting). Tea/coffee and chocolate biscuits provided. The plan is to have these meetings on the last Tuesday of every month. This is the article chosen for the BOK 8 Information resource management and resource management for August:
Lehman, K. A. (2014). Collection Development and Management. Library Resources & Technical Services, 58(3), 169-177. The questions are:

1. Demand-driven acquisitions (DDA) mean that “Rather than purchasing what librarians anticipate patrons want, libraries are purchasing the resources at the point at which it is used or requested by the patron… a shift from the just in case model to just in time, with the focus moving from collections to usage and the decision moving from librarians to patrons” (page 170). What are your thoughts on this statement?

2. There is a shifting balance of print and digital resources. What do you think are some of the challenges with this shift?

3. Open Access (OA) is becoming a consideration in e-resources collection management, such as journal articles, available freely online. How does your library identify suitable “OA” resources and add them to the library collection?

4. Thinking of the last section “Tending to the Collection: Weeding”, how does the weeding program work in your library?

5. This article was published in 2014, and examined the collection development and management literature of 2011 and 2012. Do you think there has been much change in the trends identified by Kathleen Lehman since then?

If you would like to join the discussion group please email lorna.smith@cpit.ac.nz . You do not have to be a TELSIG or LIANZA member. Thanks to the MIT group for supplying this month’s article and questions.

So now you need to read the article, think about the questions and come along on 25 August. Joan Simpson

Withdrawn library books

FYI – 25 staff put their names forward for the draw of 6 titles which we considered to have a higher $ value and or worth keeping the sets together.

Also approximately 100 people attended the book giveaway today – my guess is that about 70% of the E’s were taken, 40% of PTs and 10% of Ps.

The last giveaway for 2015 will be on Friday 18 September. Thank you to all staff who have assisted with our processes to withdraw items and make them available at a giveaway. Joan

Can you help with accommodation for 2 weeks?

We have a new staff member starting in LAC on Monday. Bronwyn and her partner Stephen have moved from Perth. They have UC accommodation until 29 July and they have a lease on a flat organized from 14 August. So from Wednesday 29 July until Friday 14 August they require accommodation. Would you be able to help them out? Do you know anyone who could help them? Either contact me or Bronwyn directly on 021 147 9721 email bronwyn1986@hotmail.com. Joan

UC staff to have option to obtain books before giveaway

There are 6 older titles which we have either withdrawn or have been donated and they are not required by the Library. The Library are offering these titles to UC staff ahead of the 7 August book giveaway. The titles are mostly sets with publication dates between 1886 and 1920. They therefore carry a higher value than most of the withdrawn items. Anne and Alex have given their approval for all UC staff to be offered the titles. The first message will appear in Intercom this Friday. The titles will be able to be viewed in the LAC workroom. I have attached the document which will be linked to Intercom here.

None of these titles were required by the other NZ University Libraries and the auction houses the Library uses did not recommend taking the books to auction. Names of all staff interested in a title will be put into a ballot and one name drawn for each title on 6 August. If you have enquiries which you cannot answer – please refer them to me. Thanks Joan
