The linked pdf is some of the information the new students will receive on Friday 17 February. This is the first time I have seen it. I think it looks good and it refers to library tours in the check list which is good but it only mentions tours at the Central Library.
On the web page for student orientation there is a link to Library tours which gives the details and dates for all of the planned library tours.

The following document will be included in this weeks Intercom and is on the library Web page.
Central Feb Update Please direct students and staff to this message.
Level 11 It has been confirmed this morning that Level 11 will be closed to the Library Community from Monday 13 February. Some stock will be moved on Friday afternoon as the Hawkins team trial the process. The shelving from this floor will be removed from the building however it is likely that the furniture will be stored somewhere within the building. It is likely that some of it tables will be stored on a balcony and then covered for protection from the weather.
The Den The computers in the Den have now been upgraded and the datashow is operational. Bookings for groups can be made via the link book a room or equipment on the library webpage.
North West stairs The stairs between level 2 and level 5 on the north west stairwell are able to be used by staff to get to and from the staffroom. Contractors will continue to be working in this area over the next couple of weeks so please take care. Contractors have been asked to leave the stairwells as accessible as possible. They are plastering around the new window frames.
Teams providing Service from Level 2 In addition to the Library and ICT staff on level 2 we now have staff promoting the following services. Canterbury Card, Health Services, International Enrolments and the Recreation Centre. The desk selling car parking permits is meant to be set up on the space between level 1 and 2 at the entrance to the James Hight Building.
Library Tours Library tours are starting in the Central Library from 16 February at which time I hope the noise of construction and equipment is at a low. There is a big push by the contractors to have the Undercroft Phase 2 completed by 17 Feb.

The Campus planning for orientation this year has felt a bit disjointed as new staff throughout the univeristy are in roles organising the events for the first time. However, a number of events are planned to welcome new and returning students. Please check out the orientation link on at http://www.canterbury.ac.nz/orientation.
The students will receive most of this information in packs. However it is useful for us to be able supply the information online for them at an Information Desk. The link to the library tours and tutorials is also on this page. We will link to it from the library home page next week. The same document is attached here for your information. At Central this year we are trialling a more in depth tour as the building is large and asking students to book for a tutorial at a later time. Students can book now for the tutorial – Libraries – Learn how to use them via the book a library course link.
The LRIS managers have all contributed to this document.

3 February 2012
Hi all
The attached powerpoint file shares photos of how the shelving in the Central LIbrary performed after the December shakes; some methods of keeping stock on the shelves which Central is trialling and what has been happening on levels 4 and 6.
Any thoughts on keeping books on the shelves – which are releastic in an open library – will be gratefully received.

Just a reminder that from Monday the borrowing period for undergraduate students will increase to 28 days for books and Journals. For staff and research students no change to the borrowing period for books but they will now have 28 days for journals.
Fines will again be charged.
Standard fines have decreased to 25 c per day.
The greatest change is in the recall charge at $3.00 per day or part day
A borrower can renew an item 4 times only – this includes a daily High Demand item.
Please check the website next week for all of the changes.

The attached file is a summary of the changes to borrowing and charges which the library is introducing in 2012.

From time to time over the next 2 months the staff entrance on level 1 will be blocked off for construction work. We are unlikely to get advance warning of this. Please follow all barriers, they are there for our safety.
There will always be sufficient emergency exits to get out of the building.
If you are entering the building before the library opens please use the entrance on the South side of the building (where students used to access the loft). You scan your card in the same way as the staff entrance and then come up the West lifts.
Please note that level 5 is a restricted area therefore when in the West or East lift you will need to scan your canterbury card before pressing the level 5 button. If using the staff lift by the library workroom then the Canterbury card is not necessary.

Hi all
The following photograph is the first new window to be fitted in the Central LIbrary. It is the test case for timing etc. The first priority for the windows will be the two stairwells on the north side which go from level 1 – 5. The work is due to start next Monday. Then the windows around the level 2 workroom, the Den and the North side of Level 2.
The frames are dark alumimium and they are double glazed. As you can see in this image you can also open the windows.

The following information is now available via the Library webpage and I have requested it is included in Intercom.
Further remediation work on the Central Library and Learning Hub will commence from 21 November when the Hawkins Construction team plan to start removing windows and frames from the north side of Levels 2, 3 and 4 of the James Hight Building starting with the stairwells on the north side which face the C Block Lecture Theatre.
This work will mean that during December/January some areas of Levels 2, 3 and 4 will not be fully available to staff and students. In most cases access to the book stock will remain but there will be some areas where the library shelving is too close to the windows to maintain public access as the work is carried out. Library staff will maintain access to all library materials.
The reason the north side windows are being replaced first is that stage 2 of the Undercroft development will continue over the summer and the University is planning for Stage 2 to be completed by the start of the academic year 2012. Replacing the windows will mean that the scaffolding on the north side can be removed for the start of semester 1, 2012.
Over 2012 all Levels of the James Hight Building will have the following work completed:
• new windows and frames
• new carpet
• walls painted
• replacement of heavy ceiling tiles
• crack injecting in the floor
• changes to the heating system
• an upgrade to the lighting system
From February 2012 the Hawkins teams will start work on Level 7. This level is being set up as a restricted access library floor, so that it can be used to decant the stock from the upper floors . When Level 7 is ready the book stock on Level 11 will be moved and placed on the shelves on Level 7. You will need to place a hold for any item which has been moved to Level 7. The contractors will not release Level 7 for general access. However, we will be able to organise specific times when groups can visit the floor to browse for limited periods of time.
Once the work on Level 11 is completed , the dismantled shelving will be reinstalled and the books on Level 7 will be moved back to Level 11. There will be a capacity limit of 50 people at any one time on any floor above where the contractors are working. This limit is a legal requirement as only one stairwell will be available to evacuate the building.
The entire process will then start again with the stock on Level 10 being moved to Level 7. It is expected to take 6-8 weeks to complete the work on each level.
The location of the books will change over the year, and your ability to browse whenever you want will sometimes be restricted. However, the Library staff will always be working to provide you with the items you require in the quickest timeframe possible.
Timeframe: Levels 11-6 will be completed during the academic year. As mentioned above the replacment of windows on the north side of levels 4, 3 and 2 is going to be completed over this summer. All other remediation work on levels 4, 3 and 2 will be completed over the summer of of 2012/2013
The building should look fantastic when all of the work is completed sometime in 2013. In the meantime the Central Library will continue to provide a library service even though there will be periods of noise and disruption.
High Demand – 3 day LoansUntil all of the work with the moving of the collection has been completed the High Demand 3 day loan items will continue to be shelved on Level 2 in the Self Loan Area.
