Central Library and Learning Hub

Heather and I have had a walk through of the Central Library and Learning Hub this morning.

On level 2 the siesmic joints have been exposed again and the fire protection in the gaps is being refitted into place.

On level 4 the joint which was repaired after the February quake has broken at a weld so further work is being completed to ensure the beam is as strong as it should be.

The books have fallen quite differently this time. The most work is up on Level 11 but not as many books down as last time. Levels 9 and 10 are a combination of new stock down and some stock which was yet to be shelved. One segment of the lundia unit has totally collapsed and this will be disposed of and the Antarctic Collection moved back by one stack of shelving.

Levels 6 and 8 are in good condition and level 3 will take less than a day to sort.

On Level 4 shelving has been dismantled again to expose the siesmic joint. I will reorganise the shelving plan now so that no shelving spans the siesmic joint again. This will mean some shuffling of stock. There are still nearly 2000 boxes to be unpacked, rfid tagged and shelved. In addition to this we need to pick up the books stock from the floor and shelve it.

My plans will be to have Central staff and any others who may be available to assist working in the Central Library from Monday of next week. I want to give levels 3 and 4 ready first priority.

I would expect the at least levels 2 and 3 of the Central Library to be available from the first day of semester 2.

We have requested access to the self loan material to bring out the holds and some of the 3 hr and 3 day loan material. No timeframe has been given for accesss to the self loan area.

Party – Friday 1 July 7 pm – 11 pm

The Aoraki branch of LIANZA is organising a party for Canterbury Librarians – so keep 1 July free

Shake, Rattle & Roll: Canterbury Librarian’s earthquake recovery party
Friday 1st July, 7 to 11…

Join your colleagues and friends as we shake, rattle ‘n’ roll and dance away our earthquake blues supported by a talented mystery band.

When is the Gig?
Friday 1 July, 7pm – 11pm

Who is invited? ALL Canterbury librarians, their work colleagues and significant other(s)

Where is the gig? It’s at the ever so splendid, brand new, (no stilettos) Lincoln Events Centre, North Belt, Lincoln!

How do I get there? Transport to and from the gig will be provided by LIANZA. Let us know what you need.

What does it cost? Nothing, it’s LIANZAs way of supporting Canterbury Librarians and their families. If you want to help with a small koha on the night or a plate of something scrummy to support the catered Kiwiana supper, that would be appreciated.

To RSVP use the form on the events page:

Central Level 11 and other info.

I have employed 13 additional students to assist with the shelving in the Central Library. They started last night on level 11. We all worked together last night but now they are working hours which are convenient to them. They are able to work between the hours of 9 am – 8 pm Monday – Friday and between 10-5 pm on this Saturday. Their canterbury cards allow them access from levels 2 up to Level 11.

Once the work on Level 11 is completed they will moved down and finsih off Level 10. During the day shifts the students are sharing this floor with 5 painters who are painting the core walls white. All of the floors have had the cracks filled in the core walls around the lifts, toilets and stairs. The painters are not expected to be out of the tower under the end of next week.

By Friday staff will have completed unpacking the boxes on level 3 which if a great achievement. Desks and chairs will be brought in so that students can sit around all of level 3. This will add another 100 or so tables and chairs ready by Tuesday 7 June – if not before.

If you are working at the Central Library the students working on level 11 have been asked to sign in and out at the Information desk. If by chance the library is evacuated please try and take the list of people on level 11 so that we can do a head count once everyone is out of the building.

Student Support Services – Level 3 of Central Library

Library staff are currently removing material from the admin offices on level 3. From 7 June staff from the Student Support Services group will be using most of the space in the old Library administration area.

The meeting room will still serve as the staff room, however we will have to move the fridge, hot water urn and drink supplies into the meeting room as well.,

The reception area will be used by the PA to the PVC of student services.

So from next week when you are heading to the level 3 staff room please enter through the double wooden doors from the corridor by the kitchenette.

Please introduce yourselves to the staff as they move into the area. I do not have any timeframe for staff moving into level 2.

Levels 9-11 Central Library

The scaffolding has been removed from the stairwells from 11 down therefore we are able to access these floors. They will not be open to the students for a couple of weeks as contractors are still working on these floors. This morning the high demand material was collected from these floors and this afternoon the first pull list will be collected and processing during the evening shift.

Pat Robertson – Shelver at Central

I have been advised via Pat’s daughter that Pat had a heart attack yesterday at home. She was in a coma when her son found her. She is in the ICU unit and still in a coma today. This news has come as a big shock to those of us who have been working closely with her as we unpack the books in Central. As I receive updates I will let you all know.

Library Warehouse

The requests from Library warehouse have started being collected and E-Services have made the requesting service available again. If you are talking with library users please ensure they know their requests will be retrieved. Some staff are working in the library warehouse to shelve the boxes which were moved across to the warehouse from Central prior to 22 February.

The boxes have been in the way of the map cabinets and I would like to thank staff for their patience. At this time I do not have a finish date but staff are shelving in the warehouse every day so the number of boxes in the way are reducing.
