Many thanks to all the staff who have assisted in the packing up of level three. Many boxes were packed yesterday however today we came to a standstill waiting on a new supply of boxes.
There is still 15 stacks of 70 shelves each to pack up. So another days work at least. Some of the stacks are in the area which was affected by the broken water pipe, so we need to ensure that anyone willing to work in this area as overalls on and that they are using face mask with a respiratory valve on it.
I will advise the managers when a new supply of boxes has been received.
If you are able to assist I ask that you sign in at the front entrance, put a hard hat on and a high visibility vest and come in to the library. Please use the stairs in the middle of Level 2 to come up to level 3. There is scaffolding there but no one is working on it. It is not longer acceptable to come in to level 2 without a hard hat so if there are none left at the entrance then call me 0274 504 201.
A small team of staff were working on Level 3 of the Central Library today. We were able to retrieve some items for holds and will achieve more during the week. There was a water leak on 22 February so we are now removing the damaged book stock from the QE section. Levels 2 and 3 are a construction site. It is very noisey and very dusty. The carpet on level 2 and 3 is to be replaced and all of the ceiling tiles are being changed to the lighter ones on these floors. Once some book empty boxes arrive staff will be packing up the books from level three so that the carpet can be done. It will look fabulous when the work has been completed.

Level 2 of the Central has been packed up so that the siesmic joints can be repaired, the ceiling tiles replaced and eventually the new carpet installed. You will also see that they are injecting the cracks in the stairwell walls.
I look foward to the return of Level 2 to the 21 February layout.
From Monday 4 April the Central book stock will be shelved at the Education Library. The High Demand material will remain at the Macmillian Brown Library.
Please note that the Business and Economic (Commerce) books which are call range HB-HG will remain at the Macmillian Brown Library along with the Law and EPS book stock and High Demand material.
The Central DVD collection has also been moved to the Education Library.

Once again I am including notes for my Central team here on Counterculture as the messages may be of interest to a wider audience. Please do not forward my comments to other University staff without speaking with me first.
If you have visited the Central Library recently you will know it looks chaotic but all work is on schedule and the library will be open at 8 am on Monday 21 February.
The Library is currently recruiting for 3 additional Casual Library Assistants for the 2011 academic year. Applications close next Tuesday 1 February.

I have placed the following message on the library website and UC Diary. Hopefully we will be able to give away a good number of books from the tables on level 2.
Central Library book giveaway – Wednesday 2 February 11 am – 2.30 pm
Following on from the book giveaway in December the library staff have now had an opportunity to remove out of date and duplicate stock from levels 2-4. These books will be available free to anyone who wants to give them a good home on Wednesday 2 February from 11 am – 2.30 pm. You are invited to come and browse to see if any of the weeded stock is of interest to you. You will be able to access the library through the student locker area on level 1 and then up the internal front steps to the library. Bring a bag along to take the books away. Level 2 is currently being painted so please keep within the restricted areas. The Central Library will reopen on Monday 21 February.
I have attached the most up to date floor plans for levels 2 and 3 for you all to have a look at. Also the first carpet tiles were glued down on level 4 today and some shelving is up. I thought you all might like to have a look at it.
As the loft is no longer on level 5 levels 2 and 3 have an increased number of computers. There will eventually be at least 160 computers. The area where QH-R are currently shelved may not be clear by the time we open on 21 February. The budget for the purchase of some new furniture drawn on these plans has not yet been allocated. The copy centre is moving back into the library the week beginning 14 February.
The colours for the artwork on the glass entrance and high demand area are in the level 5 staffroom if you want to take a look.
I have been advised that until the scoffolding is erected on the south side of the building the loading bay will not be available. Deliveries will need to come up the ramp at the east end and under the buidling. Once the loading bay is available again the trucks will pull up to a scaffolding platform and not the building. I think there will be aout 2 metres of platform before the building.
