Library Staff Interacting with Learn – Semester 2
As previously noted some academic staff will be using LEARN the learning management system (LMS) for their Semester Two courses.
It has been agreed that frontline library staff will be able to use a generic login to view course LEARN pages in order to assist students with queries in person at a library or via some other communication option eg online or by phone.
It is important that we respect the conditions of use agreed to for this generic login – we use it when a student requests assistance with their LEARN pages.
The login gives limited view only access to the LEARN pages
A wiki page is being created which gives more details regarding the type of assistance to be offered.
From the Learn site: learn.canterbury.ac.nz
Login details are – Login libhelp Password canterbury
We will be regularly changing the password. The current password will be recorded in the wiki.
Instead of bringing staff together for familiarisation sessions now as was intended, I would ask that staff within each Library share their knowledge to ensure that all frontline staff know of the login and wiki and that they are confident to assist customers. Staff who have recently attended the Web2 courses will be great resource for this.
The main impact of the introduction of LEARN is expected to be during Semester One 2010.
Any queries or concerns please get in touch.

Filming in Central Library
Tuesday 2 June or Wednesday 3 June from 6 pm onwards
A group of 6 Fine Arts students have been given permission to film in the library. They plan to film paper dropping off level 3. I have recommended they use the area closest to the workroom to avoid student areas and the main entrance. They will be picking up any paper dropped at the completion of the filming. They are not expecting to take more than an hour from start to finish. The student I spoke with was Grace Campbell. Please support this group of students however ensure that the safety of all library users and staff is not compromised. Thanks
Also on Wednesday 3 June from 1 pm Steve Russell will be in the library filming a student using the self issue machine. With this footage he is going to combine a person signing the instructions. Steve will be using this film clip as a demonstration at a conference he is attending later in June. We will be able to put this film clip onto our website. Helen Doidge can be contacted if there are any queries regarding this filming.

Zac Harding
Sadly I have received a resignation from Zac Harding this week. Zac has been offered a full time Library Assistant’s position with Christchurch City Libraries and he will be based at the Centre for the Child at the Central Library on Gloucester Street. Zac’s last day with the Central team will be Saturday 20 June. Zac’s high level of customer service and positive attitude towards his role will be greatly missed. I know we will all be wishing Zac all the best with his new role.

CD Collection Central Library
The music CD collection at the Central Library has been moved into the space between the lifts on level 2. This move will make the collection more accessible to our customers. The CDs are shelved in numerical order and not genre. We hope you feel like taking some music home with you when you are next in the Central Library. Joan

Staff Training – How to use the features Moodle will offer (Change of date)
Moodle Training sessions on the following dates have been arranged in conjunction with staff from UCTL.
Thursday 23 April 2-4 pm or Friday 24 April 9-11 am or
Monday 11 May, 2-4 pm
Venue Central LIbrary Level 5 Training Room
The session will run for 1 ½ hrs and the content will be based on the courses being run by UTCL for the academic staff. Minor changes to content may be made if something more specific for library staff can be included.
The purpose of this training is to provide the Information Librarians with the skills to promote the library resources and services where appropriate via the Moodle Course pages. Time after this session has been allocated as a tea break and forum for discussion on ways to use Moodle.
Please note that we are happy for staff from all service areas to attend in order to improve your awareness of this course management system. However, please ensure your Manager has approved your attendance.
A general overview session will be offered to public service staff before the start of Semester 2 so that we are all familiar with the look of the Moodle screen.
Please email Maureen Ruki to book your place. Maureen
