The lending stats for the year to date have been calculated and we have already managed to reach our goal of 5% self check out. That’s great news. Of course now we have to set a new goal. The self check out machine at the Education Library was used for 19% of the check outs to date. As the libraries are not comparable by size it is not wise to make direct comparisons, however it does demonstrate the library users are making the choice to self check out, once they know how the machine works. There have been 31,856 items check out not including hourly loans from the Central Library and 1,522 of those were on the self check. Let’s aim for 10% shelf check before the end of term 1. Please take the opportunities available to promote the service and demonstrate how to use the machine.
Thanks for the promotion to date. Joan

Sandra Gover, Victoria Gilpin and Joan Simpson are pleased to announce that:
Pui-Yu Chan, Michael Tubby and Tim Bowron have accepted Library Assistant positions with the Central Library.
Some of you will have worked with Michael and Tim as they have been staff on the casual library assistant team.
Pui-Yu Chan is new to the library system however she graduted from Canterbury at the end of last year so is familiar with the environment. Pui-Yi commences her training with us at the Central LIbrary today. Michael and Tim start their permanent shifts on Wednesday.
Please make these new staff welcome in our work environment.

Electrical work on Saturday
On Saturday staff from facilities management will be working on level 2 to remove the senors no longer needed and to remove the lighting.
If working over the weekend please ensure the area is safe and encourage customers to take care going to the lift or toilets.
Hopefully the daylight will provide sufficient lighting for customers. Please apologise if necessary for any inconvenience the low levels of lighting in this area may cause.

Central Library 2009 Desk Arrangements
In the last couple of weeks I have read the documentation relating to the One Desk project and participated in a number of meetings with library and ICTS staff regarding the proposed plan to move to One Customer Service Desk on the Lending side of the library.
At LLT yesterday my recommendation NOT to proceed with Central LIbrary staff offering their customer services from one desk in 2009 was accepted.
We will still be aiming for a one desk service point for customers, however it is hoped that the design of a new service point will be done at the same time as other changes which are being considered for Levels 1 and 2 of Central LIbrary.
Staff from Information Services and ICTS will work from the current Help Desk – minor modifications may be done to the current desk.
Lending and reserves staff will work from the current lending desk.
The staff from the Information Services team will continue to work on the Lending Desk over the summer breaks.
If you have any queries or comments on this decision please let me know.

New lift installation
The work for the new lift on level one of the Central Library will commence on Saturday 29 November. The contractors will be working on Saturday and Sunday in order to get as much of the noisey concrete cutting work completed. There will be no Access to Level 1 from the library entrance and a hoarding will be placed about 1.5 metres out into the existing stairwell. There will be sufficient space left for the library users to use the stairs. The ATM and snack machines on level will not be available until mid January 09. From now until mid December the lift pit will be excavated and concreted. The contractors will be taking the concrete and dirt out along the walkway underneath the building. As the contractors are working within a relatively small area, the lift will have to be constructed on site. The contractors plan to check in with me on a regular basis so please let me know if you have any concerns. Notices are being prepared to explain to library users about the work and to apologise for any inconvenience. The current timeframe has the new lift in operation mid March 09.
