Law Basement – Collection codes

Bay 26 shelving is being dismantled
Bay26 also known as Store E – no longer exists (z26j and z26b are no longer valid collection codes)

Law Basement – Store B The shelving from Bay 26 is going to be erected in the Law Basement. We will have the existing library cage area and a new Section A. The collection codes for Section A will be zlAb (monographs in section A, Law Basement) and zlAj (journals in section A, Law Basement)

The new collection codes were necessary so that staff who are retrieving and shelving know which section of shelving to be in.

There have also been two distinct collections added to the Law Basement
MidHigh German – moved from Level 4 Central Library
deJong – moved from Bay 26

zlAb Law Basement – Section A
zlAj Law Basement – Section A
zlb Law Basement monograph
zlj Law Basement journal
zldjb De Jong book
zldjj De Jong journals
zlmhg Mid high German

The de Jong collection has been shelved in LC order (monographs and journals together), the Mid high German will be shelved this week and the serials from Bay 26 will not be shelved until the shelving as been erected. Best estimate is 3 weeks from now.

Please take care when you are placing transit items into the crates that they go to the correct location.

Please get in touch if you have any queries.

Joan

UC Warehouse – Bay 26 – update

All items have been packed from the shelving in Bay 26. Thanks to Ali Beken, Chris Lyall and several contract staff. The low use de Jong collection has been shelved in the existing Law Basement shelving. Over the next two weeks the shelving in Bay 26 will be dismantled and erected in a new space in the Law Basement which has been allocated to the library. Serials and the Abstracts and Indexes from Bay 26 are temporarily unavailable. Any queries please get in touch. Joan

Bay 26 UC Warehouse – Store E to be dismantled

The Library have been required to move the compact shelving from Bay 26 so that equipment from Engineering and Science labs can be stored in the higher space.

It is planned that the shelving will be moved to space in the Law Basement which is behind the current library cage. This new location is a bonus for us as it will be more convenient for staff who retrieve and shelve in our store areas.

Unfortunately there will be a time delay between packing the serials (z26j) and getting them back on to the shelves. E-services will make the items not available for at least 3 weeks. It takes time for the contractors to dismantle all of the shelving and reassemble it again.

Bay 26 (z26b) also held the low use deJong collection. This collection is being moved but is being shelved immediately on to empty shelving within the existing library cage area.

The team working on Bay 26 are working in cramped conditions and I am grateful for their perseverance.

Bay 26 and Store E will no longer exist.

We will update all information as soon as we have the files of scanned items available.

Please forward all returns for Bay 26 to the Central Library and we will manage their shelving from there.

Please contact Joan Simpson if you have any queries.

Compact Shelving – Blocks

We have had blocks provided to rest over the tracks for the compact shelving in order to ensure the stacks cannot close in on staff. The first blocks prepared are to be trialled in MB and Store A – Library and Archives. As the tracks are a known hazard we thought it was better to keep the blocks with the tracks. Please trial them if you work in these areas. Send any feedback to me for modification. These are for your increased safety if you choose to use them. Joan Simpson

Christchurch City Libraries – new library in the Square

I will be attending a focus group for external stakeholders of Christchurch City Libraries on 12 May, on behalf of UC Libraries.
The focus group are meeting to contribute ideas for the library to replace the CCC, Central Library in the Square.

We have been asked to consider “What is most important for consideration in the design, development and integration of space and services of a New Central Library?” The format of the meeting will be an update on the project and informal discussion and ideas sharing.

Please email me if you would like to share your thoughts on the Library on Friday 2 May between 2- 3 pm. I will book a venue once I have an idea of the numbers who want to talk about the new library before I head to the focus group.

I would also encourage you visit yourvoice.ccc.govt.nz to contribute your ideas. Joan Simpson
