Anton started work with the Library Support Services Team yesterday. Over the coming weeks he will be visiting UC Libraries and getting to know as many of you as he can. He has previously been employed by the Otago University with the ICT team so the Library world is relatively new to him. We are really pleased to welcome Anton and to have a him begin work on the management of the Research Repository.
Anton has provided a brief summary. If there was one word that would sum me up, that would be ‘eclectic’. I know that’s a bit of semantic cheating, but it’s about as good as it gets. I’m a Dunedin boy (though born in Gore) who has spent 10 years working in London during the dot.com boom and accidentally fell into working with computers. I have undergrad degrees in Neuropsychology and Social Anthropology, and I’m finishing off my MIS through Victoria – I only have my research project left. I’ve done a lot of IT project management and account management, and I moved into libraries because that’s where all the interesting stuff is happening. I love playing euro-style board games (especially co-operative ones), going to the roller derby, cats, the national programme and reading trashy space opera. I’ve done a lot of work with community radio in the past, and at some point I’ll look at getting a slot on Plains FM, if they’ll have me.
My partner, Maria, is staying down in Dunedin for the time being, so we’ll be flying up and down a lot.

The Library has been advised that the Law Basement is to be cleared of books and shelving so that crack injecting can be completed. The Project Office are organising for a contract to be signed for a company to come in and pack the library items and then for the items to be available for retrieval offsite. This is a similar project to packing up level 4 of the Central Library We have one and maybe two weeks to get the records for the Law Basement as up to date as possible.
LSS staff are concentrating on the titles which are in Horizon as ZLJ2 (unbarcoded journals). They are be checking if the titles are barcoded and changing the status to ZLJ. The team are barcoding items only if by barcoding a few titles a run is completed. We are not going to attempt to barcode all items in the Law Basement.
There should be little change from a customer point of view as they will still request for retrieval. If an item is not barcoded we will interloaning it as we will have no way of identifying it until it is returned.
When final details are known a news item will be placed on library news.
We are pleased to announce that:

By the end of today the theses collection will be in the Library Warehouse. It is now shelved in alphabetical order within each year. There is no longer a separation by subject. The collection will be made available to place a hold on the catalogue today. There is still some work to do in the warehouse as the annual reports and Horrie Brown collection are not yet in their final spaces. There are also a number of thesis which have been separated out from a CD or floppy disk so there is some additional work to finish the project required in 2013. In the new year the spare cartons and pellets will be moved out of the warehouse. The warehouse layout map has been updated. Warehouse layout 2013. Joan Simpson
