Welcoming Tiresa

Kia ora koutou,

Tiresa, our new Pacific Liaison Librarian is starting on 12 December and we would like to welcome her and her whānau into her new workplace.  As part of the celebrations, we will give our guests a ribbon lei (ula lipine).  But I need your help!  On Friday morning (2 December) we will be having a working bee in Te Rua Makerspace with the goal of making around 20 leis.  You don’t need to be super skilled and we will provide ribbons, thread and needles.

Please feel free to drop in at any time in the morning (9-12) and I will get you started.

Any questions, please let me know.

Poo of the Pigeons – update

Kia ora koutou,

It is with a happy heart that after 6 months of BEIMs requests I can give you all an update on the solution to the pigeon mess outside the northwest undercroft doors.

Paul from FM rang today to say that they are going to install spikes and bird deterrent gel on each level over the doorway.  This work will be done by Golman and will take place between now and the holiday break.

Hopefully this will work and the pigeons won’t surprise us with a new roosting spot.

Working from Home Guidelines – WorkSafe

Kia ora koutou,
WorkSafe have recently released some useful guidance on working from home. This includes some practical tips and considerations to make when setting up your home workstation which may be helpful to you.
This guidance may be of help if you are setting up a regular working from home arrangement as People and Culture now ask you to complete a risk assessment form and to provide a photograph of your home desk set-up.

Community Volunteer Day 2022

Seeing as our community volunteer day last year was such a success, the Library managers would like to support you to do it again this year.  If you are keen, you can take a day to do voluntary community work during your work hours. This is given without the need to take official leave.

Please discuss this with your manager if you are interested – it is a great opportunity to give back to your community.

For inspiration, look at the Volunteering Canterbury website, or you may already be involved in an organisation which offers the opportunity to volunteer your time eg. Church, Sport, Club, Community group.

Last year a group volunteered at the Smith Street Urban Farm and by all accounts, it was a very satisfying experience – you can read about it here: https://blogs.canterbury.ac.nz/counterculture/2021/12/14/report-back-volunteering-at-smith-street-urban-farm/

Hapori Community of Practice Teaching Award

Kia ora koutou,

I am very excited to announce that Theresa Buller has won the inaugural Hapori Community Of Practice award for her work in creating the LAWS205 Legal Research online modules.  This is the culmination of many years of hard work and advocacy by Theresa and past law librarians to make legal research skills acquisition compulsory in one of the 200 level law papers.  Congratulations Theresa, it is wonderful to see your valuable work acknowledged!

The winners of the all the teaching awards will be celebrated at Hui Whakamānawa on 30 November.

Health and Safety reps needed!

Kia ora koutou,

You may have seen the notice on the new intranet today about nominations opening for Health and Safety Representatives.   In the Library we are seeking some keen people to fill the H&S rep roles.

You do not need any experience,  but an interest in maintaining a safe environment for everyone is essential.

You can either nominate yourself (just let me know) or another person (with their permission).  Simon Burge and I are the Departmental Safety Officers for the Library and along with the H&S reps, we meet quarterly to discuss any issues.

If you are interested but unsure what will be involved, please do come and have a chat with me.

The nomination form is here:  https://ucliveac.sharepoint.com/sites/IntranetFromOurCommunity/SitePages/s22i9lsn.aspx

Nominations close on 23 September.

ngā mihi,

Sara
