10,000 Steps Challenge starts Monday

Kia ora koutou,

If you would like to join the UC Library team in the 10,000 steps challenge, sign up today or tomorrow so you can start counting your steps on Monday.

The best link to use is:

https://www.10000steps.org.au/health-challenges/2020-auhc/

Scroll down and choose to join the Challenge Team at UC.  You will then be prompted to sign up (if you are joining for the first time) or sign in (if you participated last year).

Then let me know you have signed up, so I can add you to the Library team.  We have 9 in the team so far.

Every week day we will head out for a 30 minute walk at 12 noon, leaving from the returns bin area in the Undercroft.  This is a great way to see the local spring growth and boost your steps for the day.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Sara

10,000 Steps Challenge 2020

Kia ora koutou,

The Library has entered a team into the 10,000 steps challenge again this year.  You may remember last year when we recorded our steps over a six-week period and managed to come out on top of the leader board for UC, narrowly beating the UC Pasifika team.  I invite you to join the effort this year, where you can record your steps or other activity towards the goal of 10,000 steps a day.

What is the 10,000 steps challenge?

10,000 steps is an Australasian University Health Challenge, which encourages NZ and Australian universities to compete in tracking physical activity over a period of 6 weeks. This year the competition runs Aug 31 – Oct 11, with 18 universities entered (6 NZ teams).  The goal is to complete 10,000 steps each day for the six week period.  It sounds daunting, but it is surprising how quickly steps add up over a day as you walk around the workplace, up and down stairs, and around campus.

What if I can’t do that many steps per day?

It doesn’t matter!  All steps are useful for health benefits and for increasing our total. Some days will be filled with more steps than other days.

How do I count my steps?

  • Fit-Bits, Garmin products, or similar fitness trackers
  • Smart watches
  • Your Smartphone

Find the device that suits your lifestyle best before the event launch on August 31. If you want you can also download the 10,000 steps app to help upload your steps via your mobile device.

Where do I sign up?

  1. Using Firefox or MS Edge, go to the 10,000 steps website: https://www.10000steps.org.au/ and click sign up using your UC email (or log in if you participated last year)
  2. Follow the instructions (if you were on last year’s team click previous participant)
  3. Join UC’s team
  4. Bookmark the webpage so you can find it easily
  5. Let me know you’ve joined and I will add you to the Library team
  6. From Aug 31 to Oct 11 track your steps using the dashboard on the web – use the + on the dashboard.

NOTE: There is a section for health goals asking for body measurements, which I found very off-putting!  This section is entirely optional and private.

We only have a week before the competition starts, so enter now!  I will be in touch with more details about daily walks and other activities soon.

If you need help signing up, or have any questions, let me know:  extension 93882, or sara.roberts@canterbury.ac.nz

Winter Breakfast

Kia ora koutou,

Because it is winter and we might need some seasonal cheering up on Thursday 23 July the Library managers will be serving breakfast from 7:30 in the staff room (Level 5 Puaka-James Hight). There will be 4 serving times: 7:30, 8:00, 8:30 and 9:00am.

For catering and planning purposes could you please RSVP using this Google form by 21 July indicating:

  • Any dietary requirements
  • At which serving time you would like to come

We will be serving the usual mix of cereal, fruit, and croissants with toppings.  We have received feedback that bacon or sausages would be a great addition to our repertoire, but unfortunately the lack of cooking facilities in the staff room kitchen makes this too hard to manage.

All staff are warmly invited. Please do come along.

Textbook issues and OERs

Kia ora koutou,

Last week at Library Committee I presented a paper that outlines some of the issues we have with provision of textbooks, and the role of open education resources (OERs) as a possible solution.  The paper is available if you are interested in reading it:

I am very happy to discuss this or answer any questions you have.

Room Bookings in PJH

Kia ora koutou,

There are still limited meeting rooms available for booking on level 5 of Puaka James Hight, as Financial Services are using some rooms as offices currently. However, all of those available are now on the Web Room Bookings tool.  Today, 524a Meeting Room 9 (the most confusing room name ever) was added back to the list.

Printing for students

Kia ora koutou,

One of the things students have been asking for in lockdown is the ability to print their documents.

UCPrint are offering a very limited print and deliver service to those students who urgently need it (details on this service are included below).

As an alternative solution for those students whose need is less urgent but really want to print so they can take notes and highlight materials, we have created some videos to guide them through annotating and highlighting PDF, Word and Powerpoint documents.

These videos are available here:
https://learn.canterbury.ac.nz/course/view.php?id=8559&section=2

Please have a look at them, as we may get questions about this through AskLive.

Thanks to Brian for the excellent content, and to Theresa and Richard for getting them on to Echo360.

Sara

Health and Safety Documents

Kia ora koutou,

All of the Health and Safety documents are now residing on Sharepoint rather than the K:drive.  They are in two places:

1. Health and Safety representatives meeting documents here https://ucshare.canterbury.ac.nz/management/dep/dep002/Papers/Forms/HealthSafety.aspx
2. All other Health and Safety documents here https://ucshare.canterbury.ac.nz/management/dep/dep002/SharePoint%20HealthSafety/Forms/AllItems.aspx

The easiest way to find them in the future is to bookmark the above links in your browser.

I have archived a lot of documents in this process, and they are here: K:\LIBR-Library\Health-Safety-now-on-Sharepoint\Archive

If you see anything in the archive you think should be still on the ‘live’ site, please let me know and I will shift it across.

I will arrange a Zoom session next week to show how to create a document, save a document and how to use the templates to create a meeting agenda or minutes.  If you would like to join this session, please let me know.

ngā mihi,
Sara
