Due to the extension of sick leave for Diny, the following hours are available in EPS. The hours are the same each week until the end of the Academic Year.
These hours are offered to part-time band 2 customer services library assistants.
Monday 4-9pm from 17 August to 9 November
Tuesday 1-4pm from 1 September to 10 November
Sunday 10am-5pm 30 August to 8 November
Staff would be offered a temporary variation to their hours of work in their contract if they committed to one or more of these shifts for the rest of the year.
Please send any questions and expression of interest to Jenny Owens by end of Wednesday 13 August.
Since February the Library has had a group of staff from the Customer Service and Liaison teams who are Pasifika library reps (or Pasifika Champions).
These are:
Central – Dave C, Janette, Beth
Education – Aurelia, Jane
EPS – Dave L, John, Jenny
MB – Caroline, Rebecca
The role of the Pasifika library reps includes:
Developing our understanding of Pasifika students and their needs
Providing a friendly face and first point of contact for Pasifika students
Making Pasifika students feel welcome in the libraries and ensuring they get help from the appropriate staff
Taking library tours for Pasifika students (including the Pasifika cohorts in the Pathways tours)
Looking for opportunities to promote and celebrate Pasifika events and activites (both UC and external) within our libraries
Attending Pasifika events on campus to build relations with the Pacific Development Team
These staff attended Cultural Intelligence training delivered by Pauline Luafutu-Simpson. This looked at some of the common challenges that Pasifika students face in attending university and research looking at what supports Pasifika students learning. Most of the reps then met with the Pasifika mentors which provided a useful opportunity to make connections and to talk about what the library can do for students.
Roads closed for Forestry Road works.
Access to Forestry road from Fine Arts road will be closed from January 12 until January 19.
Access to Fine Arts road from Creyke road via Forestry road will be closed from January 20 until February 2.
We are sorry for the inconvenience but these closures are necessary for new electrical cables and water mains to be installed.
For further information, please call Ken McEwen on 027 886 4245
Pedestrian access should remain along Forestry road to get to and from EPS Library. We will update if there are changes to this
As of today, you can no longer walk through the Engineering building to get to EPS.
There are 2 alternative routes:
1. Along Forestry road then along Creyke Road.
2. Along Engineering Road, then along Creyke Road.
From Central Library both routes should take about 10-15mins. You must go all the way to Creyke Road on both routes as you can no longer cut through anywhere.
If EPS staff are running a little late to any meetings etc, then we are just taking a little time to adjust to leaving earlier.
Short walks may reverse harm of prolonged sitting.
A recent study at Indiana University has found that the effects of sitting for prolonged periods can be slowed or reversed by taking 5 minute walks regularly through the day.
Our award-winning exercise breaks are an important way to keep us all healthy. It seems a 5 min walk is a great alternative for those who sit all day, but should be done every hour.
At the recent Health & Safety Service Group meeting Sharon Butt asked all UC staff to send her an email about any incidents or “near miss” instances involving skateboarders or cyclists and pedestrians around UC pathways. They want to get an idea of how often and where these are occurring around campus, either on roads or pathways. If you witness anything please send an email to Sharon Butt describing the incident including where and when it happened.
When sitting at your desk only use as much muscle power as is required.
Example :
You can thump the keys down heavily when typing (lots of effort), or you can gently tap the keys (little effort).
Shoulders can be hunched up (lots of effort) or relaxed (little effort).
Head can be leaning forward (lots of effort) or relaxed and straight (little effort).
Using more effort than necessary may make discomfort, pain or injury happen more quickly than if you use your muscles efficiently and relaxed.
If you experience any discomfort, pain or injury you need to fill out an Event Report Form. Even minor muscle discomfort that comes and goes is worth reporting. It is better to report things before they become more serious.
If you are experiencing discomfort it is advisable to fill out an Event Report Form before you ask for an ergonomic assessment of your work area.
The Event Report Form can be found on the Camelot Health and Safety Page or the HR Health & Safety page.
