Visions of Peace exhibition – Last day today.

Today is the last day of the Visions of Peace exhibition in the Matariki building. I found it beautiful and thought-provoking. Here is information about it from Library News.

“Visions of Peace, The H.W. Youren Collection and the Art of Chinese Soft Diplomacy
Exhibition now on in Matariki Building, first floor
21 November-4 December

This exhibition presents a part of the collection of Chinese art from the H W Youren Collection, from MTG Hawke’s Bay, representing one man’s attempt to use art to promote communist China in post-war New Zealand. Bill Youren (1910-1983) was a tireless campaigner for world peace, nuclear disarmament and social justice. In 1950s and 60s China, he witnessed events seminal in the history of the foundation of the People’s Republic. Alongside public talks and published writings, he attempted to use art to present an alternative image of China to that offered by government and the mainstream press. This exhibition, and book of the same name, celebrates his life and the collection of Chinese art he amassed to promote New China to New Zealand.

Visions of Peace is supported by MTG Hawkes Bay, Tai Ahuriri and the University of Canterbury’s Confucius Institute.

Exhibition developed by Dr James Beattie (University of Waikato) and Dr Richard Bullen (UC Art History and Theory)”

UC Pathways Project update

Thanks to everyone who participated in the Library tours for the above project recently. The tours were well received by the students and their tutors. The students enjoyed the opportunity to walk with Library staff between Macmillan Brown and Central Libraries as this facilitated informal conversations and engagement with the students.

Next week Liaison Librarians will be conducting research skills classes for the UC Pathways students.

UC Pathways project – Library tours week commencing Monday 28 July

This week the UC Pathways project will see us conducting tours of the Macmillan Brown and Central Libraries on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. There will be 8 tours. Unfortunately, there will be insufficient time to take students to the EPS and Education Libraries, but we will mention these libraries in the tours. We are looking forward to welcoming the UC Pathways students to our libraries. Please acknowledge the students if you see them when they are on the tours.

UC Pathways – showcasing embedded library support for student success

UC Pathways is a key initiative of Student Success designed to retain at risk and priority learners. It combines learning and life skills to help first-year students to make the transition to university study and to develop the skills needed to succeed at university and it offers an enhanced student experience.

The Library has an exciting opportunity to be involved in the pilot UC Pathways initiative. The Library’s aim is to provide intensive targeted library support for students in the UC Pathways programme.

The following Library staff are members of the project team:

Project leader Aurelia Arona
Project sponsor Alison McIntyre
Group members Caroline Anderson, Elizabeth Cooke, Patricia Jordan, Glen Walker

We would like all Library staff to be aware of the project and the UC Pathways initiative. The project group will seek involvement from Library staff as the project develops in Semester 2.

The four key messages that the project will seek to deliver to UC Pathways students are:

• The Library is part of the University of Canterbury community and provides service points for students

• The Library helps students to find the resources they need in order to succeed in their studies

• The Library helps students to develop their academic searching skills

• The Library helps students with referencing their sources of information.

Please support this project by familiarising yourself with the UC Pathways information in the link above and by contributing to the project if you are asked to take part in specific activities.

If you have any questions about the project, please ask a member of the project group.

DPI Awareness Group Tip of the Week

Keyboard use

Forceful pressing on the keys can lead to muscle fatigue. A computer user should not hold a pen while keying, or hold a telephone between the ear and shoulder. Watch for resting positions or micropauses that do not allow complete relaxation of the hand and forearm. One common posture error is continuing to hold the hands up after typing has ceased.
