Janine from the Undergrad Scholarships Office has advised that the closing date of tomorrow may mean that prospective applicants may drop applications off to the library over the weekend. This is not ideal but there is no drop box at Matariki. If students do wish to drop an application off please accept it and leave it on my desk. I will contact Janine (ext. 7252) on Monday. It is unlikely that students will drop them to a Branch Library but if they do, please ring Janine.
Thanks

North West Lift JH staff entrance
Please keep an eye on the staff lift at the North East staff entrance to the library (by the Shilling club) and report any odd performance issues to me. The lift has been observed to not arrive at a floor level with the exit, however this appears to be intermittent. Please be vigilant when you use the lift.
Thanks

Update 11.04am
Security have been notified of an intermittent fault and will call OTIS out. Please note any further occurrences.
Evacuation matters/ Wheelchair users.
Over the last two weeks we have had two evacuations of the James Hight Building. The first one on the 11th of March was caused by a faulty smoke detector on level 4. The second one yesterday was the first trial evacuation for 2015. Despite the large numbers of students in the building at the time the evacuation was completed in 7 minutes and 58 seconds.
Thank you to those who took on the role of floor warden. We have two wheelchair users who regularly use level 2. They have both been briefed and if an alarm goes off they make their way to the North East stairwell outside the fire doors. They will have a staff member wait with them and send someone down to report their whereabouts to the Building warden. If you are a floor warden or staff member who comes across anyone in a wheelchair please speak with them and reassure them that you will report to the building warden as well. The fire service will make it a priority to evacuate wheelchair users.
Just a reminder that every alarm should be treated as a real emergency. An alarm means that there is something happening somewhere in the building. No one has the time to assess what it is, but we do have time to evacuate.
Thanks

Health and Safety Service Group 2
The minutes for the recent Health and Safety Service Group 2 meeting are now available on the H&S Minutes page H&S website
Items of interest:
Traffic management can be difficult on Campus at times dues to the construction work ongoing and about to begin. This brings issues of keeping students and construction work separate, which is not easy at times as we all share the same access routes onto campus.
In a previous counterculture post Jenny asked that we all keep an eye out for skateboard incidents: http://library.canterbury.ac.nz/blogs/counterculture.php?itemid=17847
A new H&S advisor has begun work to cope with the construction jobs that will come online later this year.
There will be elections for Health and Safety reps coming up in July and August. Elections are important as the University runs an employee participation H&S structure allowing direct staff input into Health and Safety issues. The role is not onerous and training is available. If you have any questions please let me know.
Entries for the H&S wellness awards are due on 27th of June.

Blu-ray player in Central Library
The library now has a Blu-Ray player which is in the self loan area of the Central library for students to use. It will play Compact Discs, DVDs, VCDs and Blu-Ray discs.
Blu-Ray discs could come in either one of three regions,
A: America (North, South and Central), Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, South East Asia
B: Europe, Middle East Africa, Australia and New Zealand
C: India, China, Russia, Central and South Asia.
Apparently the big American studios make some of their Blu-Ray discs able to play all regions. The Blu-Ray player in the self loan area will play all regions but will have to be changed if the default setting (region B) does not work.
To do this, remove the disc from the machine, On the remote control press the SETUP/HOME button, press the code 8520 on the numeric keypad on the remote. This will allow either 1 (for region A), 2 (for region B) or 3 (for region C) to be entered.
unfortunately there is no all region code for Blu-Ray discs.
DVDs also come in zones but the machine will play all zones. (The setting for DVDs on the machine is “0” (zero))
Please let me know if you have any queries.

Floor wardens Roles
Over the last few years we have enjoyed the presence of more security staff than we now have. Security staff would station themselves at the entrance to the library during and evacuation and not allow students back in until the all clear had been given.
In the last two evacuations the Security Office have not been able to provide staff to cover the main entrance and this role needs to be taken by the floor wardens. After clearing the floor with paddle and armband the floor wardens should report to the Building Warden and then proceed to the front door to stop students reentering the building before the all clear is given.
The “all clear” may not coincide with the sirens being turned off.
Both Evacuations, yesterday and today, were smooth and uneventful.
Thanks

Health and Safety Service group 2
The minutes of the Service Group 2 Health and Safety Committee held on Friday 1st of November are now available on the H&S Website.
An item that may be of interest is the changes made by the City Council to the layout of Ilam Road between the Creyke Road Corner and Rountree Street. Matt Morris of the UC sustainability Office is collecting information on incidents since the introduction of the new layout.
There is legislation being introduced into the NZ Parliament to replace the Health and Safety in employment Act (1992) and a summary of the proposed changes is also on the H&S website. This is the legislative response to the Pike River Disaster and will mean major changes to the legislative framework of Health and Safety. Our Health and Safety team are confident that the University will be in a good position to meet the challenges of the new act which will come into force at the end of 2014.

Health and Safety Service group 2 meeting
The next meeting of the Health and Safety Service Group 2 committee will be held on Friday 1st November at 10.00am in Erskine room 121. Both Wendy Wu and Hubert Thomas are Central Library reps on this committee and for Macmillan Brown the rep is Bronwyn Matthews, for EPS, Jenny Owens and for Education, Jane Agnew. This committee has an overview of Health and Safety in the Learning Resources Area of which the Library is part. Normal issues of Health and safety are dealt with through event reports, hazard assessment and control reports and BIEMS works requests. The Committee is interested in the whole Health and Safety Culture of which those things are a part so if any one has any issues that should be brought up at the meeting please speak to the Rep in your department or contact me.
Thanks
