Blood donors needed – Tuesday and Wednesday this week

This message from Health and Safety arrived in my inbox last week. Library staff may be interested.

Hello everyone

The blood bank people need our help. When they booked their mobile service to come here, they were not aware of the students being on holidays when they confirmed this mobile some 18 months ago – and they are unable to change anything.

In order for this mobile to be even remotely successful, they are hopeful that we could encourage staff on campus to donate next week. It would be a great opportunity for them – no queues (and be away from their desks for less time and of course save three lives in the process!)

I wonder whether it is possible for you to pass the word around your department and colleagues – so as to maximise the amount of blood they can procure and make the visit worthwhile! As well as feeling good about doing a good deed!

They believe that as a result of this mix up of dates, they will be some 250 units of blood short for next week, so they do appreciate any help we can offer.

Tuesday 20th and Wednesday 21st – Shelley Common Room, Student Union Building – 10am until 3pm both days

Gate Security

There has been the odd DVD gone missing from its case in the Central Library lately and it is possible that Discs have been inadvertently left by viewers in their own DVD drive on their laptops. As the DVDs are sensitised they should set the gates off. Please ask those who set the gates off if they have forgotten to take the DVd out of their computer. Thanks

electric typewriter for sale

Lending services have a Brother AX 25 electric typewriter that is surplus to requirements. Any offers or requests to view can be made to Tim O’Sullivan. If it is needed for use elsewhere in the library please let me know otherwise any offer will be considered. If there are no offers by the 1st of March the machine will be disposed of.
Thanks

Warehouse shelving

The backlog of shelving in the warehouse has now been sorted out. Those who collect items from the warehouse ought to shelve the incoming items from the hamper as they collect so that there is no buildup of shelving to be done. Items from the hamper will be “in transit” and will need to be checked in at the warehouse location.
Items collected need to be checked in to make them “in transit.” In the tools menu on the Horizon checkin screen click change receipt options and tick “in hold transit slip”. This will produce a receipt for transit to the correct location.

Here is an updated plan of the warehouse

The area of shelves outside the office includes the following:
Stack 1A Horrie Brown/ Journals/ NZ Parliamentary debates
Stack 1B Miscellaneous dross.
Stack 2 Great trigonometrical survey of India.
Stack 2 UN material/ Royal Society journals/ Miscellaneous books
Stack 2A Advertising Age
Stack 3 Warehouse monographs that did not go to Crown
Stack 4A QH-QL monographs from Central Library (Dec. 2009)
Stack 4 and 5 RSocNZ Transactions/ Sub Antarctic material (mostly damaged)
Stack 4 to 9 Cataloguing and weeding, ex Ilam collection or classified warehouse sequence
Stack 4/ shelves 50-56 Architects journal
Stack 10A Ilam Collection (transferred from the original location)
Stack 10B-12 Horrie Brown Statistics Collection (NB there are also Horrie Brown items from EL in the Classified sequence)
Stack 14 Discards/ weeds

Sorry about the fuzzy picture above.

Chair Cleaning

On Wednesday 2nd of December JAE cleaning services will be here at noon to clean all the lounge chairs on level 2 in the display area. They will also clean the computer chairs. If any staff have swivel chairs that need cleaning please bring them down that afternoon to be cleaned as well.

Warehouse changes

In the warehouse I have moved some material left from the ilam collection from the west side shelves to the east side shelves (nearest the Office). They are all in the same order and arrangement. this is in preparation for the move of serials from Level 2 of the Central Library to the warehouse.
Also, there is a skip parked out the back of the warehouse for disposals. Please don’t use the maroon recycling bins while that is available. The rear door of the warehouse giving access to the skip is alarmed so if you plan on having it open for any length of time please let security know.
Thanks

Music CDs

When the music CDs were placed on open display there were a few items that were not put on display as they were either unwieldy, too big or too valuable. An example of this is the Bach 2000 CD set.
The items are kept in the AV room on the shelves opposite the first shelf of videorecordings. In all cases “Ask at the Lending Desk” has been added to the item.
