Introducing Heather Jenks – Associate University Librarian

 Heather Jenks

Hello my name is Heather and I have recently joined the University of Canterbury Library in the role of Associate University Librarian (Research and Learning).

My initial library qualification is from RMIT and I have worked in the library world for the last 25 years. My fascination with libraries began when I worked at the University of Otago Library as a shelver during my undergraduate years and received outstanding mentoring from a staff member named Cecily Buchanan.

I started my professional career in Melbourne working in a variety of special libraries and as a library consultant. Upon returning to New Zealand in 1987. I began working at Auckland Technical Institute (later to become the Auckland Institute of Technology and then AUT University) and completed a Master of Applied Science (Library and Information Management) as a distance student at Charles Sturt University. During this time I worked in a number of positions including Media Librarian, Queen Street Librarian (subject specialisation in Commerce), Technical Services Librarian and as the Associate University Librarian, Collection Services. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at AUT, however when the opportunity arose with this position at the University of Canterbury I was happy to become a Mainlander again, with the bonus of working in an established and long standing University Library.

I have two sons who over the years have taken up a variety of interests, many of them water based, and it is nice to know that I have passed on my love of swimming. I enjoy looking at and collecting antiques. I specialise in collecting Victorian and Edwardian enamelled glass, especially if it has a lily of the valley design. I am an avid reader of detective novels and am really looking forward to working my way through the collection held in the Law Library.

Special event – SALE OF MARGARET HOWARD JEWELLERY

Margaret Howard Jewellery will be on sale in the Level 7 Seminar Room in the James Hight Building (12noon till 3.00pm) on Tuesday 18 November. (Some of you will remember Margaret visiting earlier this year and how popular her jewellery was.)

Margaret’s jewellery is sold in a number of upmarket and boutique-type stores (including The Hat Shop, Posh of Holmwood, Boxes and Tessa Mayes). Her range has pieces from the funky to the more formal and classical, and includes earrings, necklaces, bracelets, hat and sweater pins, and keyrings. Most pieces are one-offs and most are priced between $20 and $50. Margaret is happy to take cheques, but doesn’t have Eftpos facilities.

This is a great chance to do your Christmas shopping!

When: Tuesday 18 November any time between 12noon and 3.00pm
Where: Seminar Room, Level 7, James Hight (Central Library)

If you know someone in another part of the university who may be interested in looking at the jewellery, feel free to send on this information.

[If you can’t make it on Tuesday, Jocelyn Howard will have the jewellery on display at her house, 70 St Andrews Square, from 7.00pm till 9.30pm on Monday evening (17 Nov). You are welcome to drop in.]

Welcome to Summer Scholarship Student

The Library is pleased to host Rachel McConnell on a summer scholarship project which involves cataloguing the John Macmillan print collection. Rachel will be in the Mcmillan Brown library 3 days a week until the end of January 2009.

Terri Elder,Art Collection Curator, is supervising Rachel’s work. Rachel has completed a B.A. Hons degree in Art History with an emphasis on European painters. Rachel is also interested in classical art. Her grandfather attended the University and as well as both her parents. Rachel also has a unique connection to the Library as her Uncle is a Library Manager – Philip Jane.

 Rachel McConnell

Rachel plans to continue her studies and complete a Masters in Art History but has yet to decide on the topic. Hopefully, she may find something of interest in the Library’s Art Collection.

Background to the project

“In October 2004 a number of prints were located amongst archival material held by the Macmillan Brown Library. Although there was no documentation attached to the works, it is believed that these works may have originated from the estate of Professor John Macmillan Brown, whose collection was bequeathed to the University in 1935.

The print collection is comprised of 65 works, mostly prints of classical, religious or landscape themes. Many of the works are by French, Italian and European artists, engravers or printers, such as Vernet, Vaccari, Bartolozzi, Piranesi, and Caracci. In amongst the European prints there are also a small number relating to early American settlement, and the exploration of the Pacific. The majority date to between 1600 to 1900.

The scope of the collection is such that it could provide an excellent teaching and learning resource for a number of disciplines offered at UC, such as art history, European history, religious studies, political studies, Pacific studies and sociology.”
