No Law Librarians Wednesday/Thursday/Friday

John and I are both on annual leave for the rest of the week so there will be no Law Librarian on campus or working from home until Monday. Kim, Kerry and Sara (our usual backups) are also all on very well-deserved leave!!

There are two 300-level law essays due on Friday so if you get any urgent or tricky law / criminal justice questions / students can you please ask students to email me theresa.buller@canterbury.ac.nz and I’ll check my emails from home each morning.

I will be back at work on Monday morning.

Update: Westlaw Australian Journals/Content now fixed?

It appears that TR have fixed things so that our links to Australian content on the new WestlawNZ platform are now working.

We are still waiting on TR to fix some issues before we agree to turn off the old WestlawNZ platform. At the moment John and I expect this to happen towards the end of 2022. Until then if you are struggling to locate something on the new WestlawNZ platform then it is likely to be accessible on the old platform but please refer any questions to me if it escalates to this point.

Any questions or issues please let John, eServices or I know.

Annotator on Level 7 – Tuesday 10th – Thursday (?) 12th May.

Mōrena

The annotator will be based on Level 7 for the next few days.

Lynne comes in a couple of times a year to update our NZ statute books. She will cross out anything that is no longer law in red pencil and paste inserts into the books with the new law. It might look like she is defacing the books but it is absolutely ok and ensures that our print collection is up to date!

While we now have access to legislation online in multiple places (WestlawNZ, Lexis Advance and www.legislation.govt.nz) John and I  do still sometimes use the print books to trace currently in-force legislation back in time to before the databases existed.

Lynne has a green office chair and a blue trolley. Please leave these on Level 7 overnight. Kim or I will pop these away once Lynne has finished.

Any questions please let Kim or I know.

*edited to change the date to May rather than March!

CRJU101 Library workshop

Mōrena!

This morning an online Library workshop for the 400 CRJU101 students went live.

This workshop shows the students:

  • which sources are best to use for academic research and writing
  • how to find sources using MultiSearch
  • how to reference using the APA style.

It is on the CRJU101 Learn page under the Library workshop tab.

This page has all of the information that students need along with the link to a drop in Zoom session I am holding on Friday.

If you get any questions about this workshop please contact me (Theresa) or Kerry.

Take care

Disaster Law Subject Guide

Kia ora koutou

I wanted to share that John and I (with help from a 2020/21 Law Student Research Assistant) have created a new Disaster Law Subject Guide to support the teaching and research of disaster law here at UC.

You’ll find the Subject Guide here: https://canterbury.libguides.com/disasterlaw

This has been a big piece of work  to identify material which:

  1. curates content that will support UC research such as identifying all Acts and Secondary Legislation passed in the aftermath of the Canterbury and Kaikoura earthquakes. As far as I am aware this material has not been collated in any other location

and

  1. provides links to online resources to support disaster law legal research.

We will continue to add content to the Subject Guide and welcome any and all feedback on this!

Thanks

Theresa

New WestlawNZ is live – links being changed today!

Mōrena

Today John, the MDL’s and I will start updating all Library links from the old WestlawNZ platform in the library catalogue, Subject Guides and Learn to the new WestlawNZ platform. We expect this work to take all of today and some of tomorrow. I will let you know when this is finished.

You can access the new platform here: https://signon.thomsonreuters.com/federation/nzf?entityID=https%3A%2F%2Fidp.canterbury.ac.nz%2Fidp%2Fshibboleth&returnto=https://anzlaw.thomsonreuters.com/Browse/Home/NewZealand160

It is very similar to the international Westlaw platforms (Westlaw International and WestlawNext Canada) in navigation and functionality. The most significant change is that WestlawNZ now uses the Thomson Reuters key number system as way to organise cases by topic and key number. It is another way to locate cases on a topic. There is still the ability to search the new WestlawNZ by citation and keyword.

We have also changed the way in which you authenticate as a UC user. You will now be asked to sign in to use any Thomson Reuters platform and have the ability to save material to folders and email material to yourself. You also have the option to save favourites and set up your own alerts.

A reminder that I am going to run an introduction to the new WestlawNZ session for Law academic staff on Thursday 25th November at 1pm.  If any Library staff wish to attend I can send you a Zoom link.

We are intending to turn off access to the old WestlawNZ platform at Easter 2022. I will let you know when this occurs.

Any questions please get in touch.

WestlawNZ – new platform

Kia ora koutou,

Westlaw NZ is being replaced by a new platform which we are currently referring to as new WestlawNZ.

WestlawNZ is one of our giant NZ legal platforms and is used extensively by Law and Criminal Justice students.

The old platform will be switched off at Easter 2022.

From Monday 22nd November John, the MDL’s and I will start to change all the links across the library catalogue, Subject Guides and other library webpages to the new platform.  We will be teaching this platform as part of our legal research teaching from Semester 1, 2022.

The key change is that students will now need to login to WestlawNZ and then have the option to personalize the platform for their own use. This change also applies for all our other TR platforms (Westlaw International, WestlawNext Canada and Westlaw UK).

I am going to run a training session for the School of Law which I’d like to open to any interested Library staff. However because we are in Level 2 and due to space constraints in the room I’d like to ask any Library staff to attend via Zoom. The session will be on Thursday 25th November at 1pm. If you’d like to attend please let me know and I can send you the Zoom link.

I’ll send out another update on Monday.

CRJU160 and the NZLSG

Hi

The 200ish CRJU160 students have their 2nd essay due next week.

They need to use the NZLSG for this rather than APA.

I have created an online workshop for these students which covers:

  • An intro to the NZLSG
  • Why and when to reference
  • HOW to create their references and bibliography (I have also used all the sources they have been assigned as my examples)

This is all on the CRJU160 Learn page (under week 8).

Please direct students to this material if they ask how to get started.

Any questions please let me know

Theresa
