Westlaw International is playing up

Kia ora koutou

Westlaw International has been playing up for the last week and giving an error message that says:

Unable to access Westlaw

All of the available seats are currently in use. If you have a user name and password, sign in.

BUT it requires a TR/Westlaw login which only a few staff members have (until we sort out SAML authentication for everyone).

So… students won’t be able to access Westlaw International if anyone else is using it at the same time.

If you get any questions can you please refer them to John or I and we will see if we can find what they are looking after.

Thanks

Theresa

CRJU101 Textbook

Kia ora koutou

We have hit the 325-day limit for our electronic access to Criminal Justice: A New Zealand Introduction on ProQuest. This means there is no longer an option to download either the whole book or particular chapters of the book.

It means students will now be limited to a five minute session each and every time they look at the textbook from now until September (when the restrictions will cease and well after the final exam!).

This is the textbook for CRJU101 and in the most terrible timing the exam is TOMORROW!!!

So I have scanned the two chapters the lecturer thinks they will need for their open-book take home exam and placed them on Learn. I have also emailed the whole class of 300 students to let them know.

If you get any student questions or feedback can you please send it my way.

Thanks so much

Theresa

LAWS110 Essay due Friday 8th May (12 noon)

Mōrena

The lovely 400-odd LAWS110 students have their 2nd essay due this Friday at 12 noon.

The essay questions is ” Explain the reasons why Parliament is sovereign in New Zealand. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of parliamentary sovereignty” in 1500 words. They must use the New Zealand Law Style Guide (NZLSG) and include a bibliography (the bibliography isn’t included in the word count).

There is a lot of information on the LAWS110 Learn site for students including:

  • a workshop video from me explaining how to find material
  • a number of electronic readings from the lecturer
  • links to online versions of the students textbooks
  • an FAQ forum of students most frequently asked questions related to the assessment (Sascha – lecturer – and I will be adding to this list through the week).

I have been really hopeless at being on AskLive while on lock down but will try my best to be on there as much as I can this week in anticipation of nervous students.

The key questions I think we may get on AskLive (in case I am not on) are:

  • help finding the advantages and disadvantages of Parliamentary Sovereignty. There is no list. Students need to read widely and identify these themselves as part of their argument
  • help with the “above n ?” rule (this is 2.3 in the NZLSG). John, Kim and I have made this handout to help with this https://canterbury.libguides.com/ld.php?content_id=48132058
  • how to cite a website – students need to use rule 7.1 and include all the information they have. If there is no author or date then you don’t need to include it.

Any questions please just send them to John, Kim or I and we will take over.

Thanks so much and have a good week!

Theresa

Law Librarian update

Hi All

Another quick update for Library staff on some of the issues that law students may raise on AskLIVE in case John, Kim or I are offline.

  1. The LAWS110 Library Quiz now closes on Monday 20th April at 12 noon. Students can do this as many times as they like to get 100%
  2. I have now finished linking all the electronic texts we brought for law and criminal justice courses last week to their respective Learn courses and have let the students in each course know
  3. If anyone has issues accessing Lexis Advance they will need to ensure they are logging in with theirusernameandnumber@canterbury.ac.nz (mine is tal38@canterbury.ac.nz) and then their normal password. Lexis Advance and Safari also have a love/hate relationship so if students are using a Mac they may need to use Chrome instead of Safari.

Any questions let John, Kim or I know.

Take care

Law Librarian stuff in extraordinary times

Kia ora koutou

I send this message from my conservatory in the sun!

I wanted to quickly update Library staff on some of the issues that law students may raise on AskLIVE in case John, Kim or I are offline.

  1. The LAWS110 Library quiz was due this Thursday (26th). The due of this will change but has not been confirmed. It is likely to be late April so students can do it over the next three weeks at least
  2. With thanks to Tim, Wendy, Helen and Peter we have brought electronic access to many of the Law and Criminal Justice textbooks that we haven’t already purchased. We are busy doing all the background things to make these available to students and I am starting to create links in Learn for each of the courses which have electronic books. I am notifying classes as I go so if you get any questions can you please let students know we are working on it and I will notify them once these are set up.
  3. John, Kim and I are all working from home and answering emails etc.

Thinking of you all in these extraordinary times.

Take care

Staff Development Session – Doing it all online, developing an entire online course on Learn

I (Theresa) have completely redeveloped the voluntary legal research classes that John, Kim and I (along with Sara in the past) have previously taught face to face.

This course is now completely online and I want to share with you all my learnings along with my thoughts on what I can do better next time.

I’m running a staff development session at 11am on Tuesday April 7th 2020 in Poutama. Come along to hear me talk and ask me questions which I’ll try my best to answer 🙂
