On Monday (13th February) the ELS team will be inducting new staff and part of the induction will be Health and Safety procedures. I will host this session 11.20am-12.20pm and staff who would like a refresher or update are most welcome to come.
Hugh and I volunteered yesterday to help the Society of St Vincent de Paul Papanui make up and deliver seventy Christmas parcels for less well-off families in the Papanui, Bishopdale and Belfast areas. Each parcel contained basic food items, a meat pack and Christmas fare such as Christmas mince pies and chocolates.
Hugh and Tim started off at 9.00am with preparatory work labelling boxes and preparing the food for allocation to boxes. Further parish volunteers arrived at 10.00 to pack parcels and then begin delivery from 11.00am. Hopefully this contribution will help to make Christmas a little easier for the families who got parcels.
Thanks to the library management team for supporting our participation.
This morning a former student of UC from Auckland visited the library in a somewhat agitated state. She had been a student 45 years ago and wanted to speak to the Librarian. Clearly there was something on her mind.
After sitting down, she confessed to having lost or mislaid a book some 40 years ago and that she had made up her mind to come to the library when she was next in town to confess as the issue had been bothering her conscience ever since. The former student no longer has the book which made it even harder for her to make a visit.
We have no records going back that far I reassured her and that she was forgiven for the mistake. Hopefully she went away able to sleep better tonight.
The TEU AGM will be held on Wednesday 14th September at 4.00pm in Room 210 and also by zoom. This is a paid Union meeting so please let your manager know you will be attending. Managers are happy for members to vary their hours to accommodate attendance.
The agenda, zoom link and meeting papers will be circulated to members on Monday 12th September.
The test and Tag of all library electrical appliances and equipment is tentatively scheduled for the week of 7th June. Items excluded from the testing are computers and Ricoh multifunction devices. Last time there were two items that did not meet the test, a multi box and an extension cord. Hopefully we will have a straight forward test this year.

I am about to clean out the Art Cupboard (key 17) opposite room 210 in PJH. Much of the stuff in here appears to be surplus to library needs and I will throw it out. If you have any library use for the items in the cupboard please let me know.
Once cleared out the cupboard will be used to store chairs for student use.
Thanks
Tim O’Sullivan

First Aid Refresher training courses for the rest of the year are on 5th August (currently full), 7th October and 7th December and can be booked in UC People.
Anyone wishing to gain a first Aid certificate will need the approval of their manager as the library currently has the required number of first aiders.
Thanks to the Library Health and Safety Committee reps, Swee Hoon Goh, Dave Lane, Kathryn Andrews and Tim O’Sullivan. And thanks to the Chair of the Committee and Library Departmental Safety Officer, Sara Roberts.
Thanks also to the DPI group who are currently running sessions to keep staff updated. Ergonomic issues are probably our highest risk at work as the main tools of trade are computers so this is an important job that the DPI committee undertake on our behalf.
Next Monday (12th July) there will be a health and safety induction for any new staff who need to be familiar with our procedures.
Any longer serving staff who would like to come along are most welcome.
Please meet me in Room 203 in PJH at 3.00pm on Monday. The session will be in three parts beginning with a walk around the PJH building (3.00-3.30pm), information session (3.30-4.00pm) and walk around the EPS library (4.05-4.20pm).
