FM will be installing new swipe switches over the next couple of days in Puaka-James Hight. There may be a bit of drilling noise associated with the job especially in the tower.
The D (General history) section currently on level 10 is now being moved to level 11. E-services will be updating the records on a regular basis but if you have students looking for books in the “D” section please let them know they may have to look on both levels. All going well the whole “D” collection will be housed on level 11 and the “DA” section will start on level 10.
FM have advised that there will be no hot water in the Puaka-James Hight Building on Thursday morning as they need to repair a leaking hot water pipe. Hopefully the repair will be fixed quickly.
Do the Drop, Cover, and Hold drill for 30-45 seconds:
DROP down on your hands and knees. This position protects you from falling but allows you to still move if necessary.
COVER your head and neck (and your entire body if possible) under a sturdy table or desk (if it is no more than a few steps away from you). If there is no shelter nearby, get down near an interior wall (or next to low-lying furniture that won’t fall on you), and cover your head and neck with your arms and hands.
HOLD on to your shelter (or your position to protect your head and neck) until the shaking stops. Be prepared to move with your shelter if the shaking shifts it around.
If you will be in an elevator, outside, or in other situations during your drill or in an actual earthquake, you can adjust these steps.
While you are doing the drill, imagine that it is real and what might be happening around you. Think about what you might need to do before a real earthquake happens to help protect yourself and your staff (and customers).
Further information is available from the website but it is hoped that refreshing the procedure will keep us prepared.
The trail evacuation yesterday was completed in 8 minutes and 4 seconds which considering the number of people in the Building was a good result.
Thank you to all those who acted as floor wardens to clear your areas. After a floor warden has reported to the building warden and marked their floor clear they should keep the armband on and go to the front steps of the library to help keep the students from re entering until the all-clear is given. Floor wardens should also be prepared to go to the other entrances of the library as well. Half way through the evacuation it appeared that students were still trying to enter the building at the east entrance (next to A1-3.)
Apart from that small quibble, it was a well run evacuation. Thanks everyone.
Now that the EC microfiche collection has been disposed of the steel cabinets are now redundant and will be given away to the first comer. Otherwise they will be scrapped. If you would like one please call in and collect it from the customer Services workroom on level 2 of the main library.
Thanks,

PS. The titles contained in the EC fiche collection are now available online.
The Central library has an evacuation chair is in the corridor leading to the staff lift. If anyone would like to know how to use it I will be running a session on Monday 31st August at 9.00am. Please meet at the Customer Services Area on level 2.
