There have been problems in the past with the self-check machines refusing to issue an item to a borrower whose expiry date is earlier than the due date of the item. A recent upgrade has fixed this problem, and self-check will now allow the loan and truncate the due date to be the same as the borrower’s expiry date. This means that Self-check now works in the same way as CKO.
The Library will begin sending e-txts for overdue 3 day loans on Thursday morning. These will be sent to both on-campus students and distance students at 8.30am weekdays and at 10.30am on the weekend. The txts will have the same wording as the Overdue hourly, Overdue and requested/overdue and recalled e-txts, and the usual blocks will go on the borrower’s record.
Library IT are proposing some changes to the indexes maintained on Horizon. Note that this only refers to the indexes accessed through the Horizon software itself (PAC), and not the indexes on the Library Catalogue (HIP). The reason why we need to delete these indexes is to make room for the EEBO records to be loaded (nearly 105,000 records).
Just to let you know that the EL microfilms are now held in the Central Library. They are being kept in a separate sequence, rather than being interfiled. Because the call numbers are duplicated with the Central Library microfilms, we have added (EL) to the end of the call number. This should help you track down the item you are interested in.
Library IT have just begun tracking when an item is transferred to Storage, and how often it is used once it has moved there. This is in response to a need to be able to produce more detailed reports for staff when they are weeding from Storage. Hopefully we should get some helpful indications of usage even a couple of years down the track.
If you’re interested in the technical details of what we’re doing, please read on…
The following changes have been made to Horizon today, implementing the changes to circulation parameters that were approved last year. They are:
reducing the guaranteed loan period from two weeks to one week
reducing grace period to one day
reducing the recall loan period from seven days to three days
allowing recall of items on loan to undergraduates
Library IT have also incorporated these changes into the Automated Recalls programme. If you notice anything untoward happening, please email Library IT
The Education Library has begun using PaymentPlus for live payments this morning.
When you next start up Horizon at the lending desk, you will notice a green “$” icon at the bottom of your navigation bar. This option will take you to the live PaymentPlus system.
Remember that only the Education Library are using PaymentPlus live. All other libraries should continue to take payments using Diebold and the Horizon payments button. The remaining libraries will begin using PaymentPlus live over the next week or so. I will be in touch shortly to arrange dates.
NoelA, the Christmas Dalek sends greetings to her sisters across the Library.
(NoelA was created by Romy. NoelA’s main interest is in world domination but she is taking some time out to bring a little sparkle to the Lending Desk)
The Library Catalogue’s keyword indexes have failed. We are working on recreating them, but in the meantime any keyword search will give the result: “Sorry, could not find anything matching [your search term]” Note that the browse indexes are still working.
