Taylor & Francis (T&F) 2021 Evidence Based Acquisition (EBA) eBook program

For the 5th year, the library is doing a T&F EBA eBook program in 2021. With this EBA, our students and staff can have access to 1,676 T&F eBooks across a wide range of subjects, close to half of them are engineering eBooks from ENGnetBASE. They are either published recently or with high turnaway this year. These eBooks are available until Oct. 2022, and then we will select those titles with high usage for continuing access up to the amount we pre-paid.

All the eBooks in the T&F EBA program are DRM free, unlimited, multiuser access. Individual eBook bibliographical records are available in both the Catalogue and MultiSearch.

The usage on Springer 2020 My Collection

Following my Counterculture post, just to provide an update re the usage on Springer 2020 My Collection. 48,920 eBook chapters are downloaded between Sept. 20-Aug. 21, and the cost per download is NZ$0.98 which is an excellent ROI.

Moreover as per the 2020 contract, we can select titles for continuing access up to the prepaid value of €26,850. As Springer My Collection for 2021 has been renewed recently, we could have access to 3 years (2019-2021) subject eBook collections and will only lose access to the 2018 content by mid October.

Top 135 Springer eBooks with highest usage in 2018 collections are chosen for permanent access.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Ebook Collection

We have recently subscribed to ProQuest’s DEI Ebook Collection. It pairs well with our library’s existing subscription to Academic Complete. DEI Ebook collection include more than 13,000 unique titles across topics of gender, race, sexual orientation, physical ability, age, and political and religious beliefs. In the newest quarterly update an additional 322 titles highlighting Indigenous people of Australia, New Zealand, and Pasifika will be included.

Like with Academic Complete, all titles in the DEI subscription offer unlimited user access and chapter-level downloading.

Individual eBooks in this collection are now available in both library Catalogue and MultiSearch.

We will review this subscription in June 2022 to see if we want to continue with it beyond 2022.

Recent eBook changes on Academic Complete

ProQuest Academic Complete is a huge multi-disciplinary eBook package with over 200,000 titles we have subscribed since 2016.

In mid-June, over 10,000 eBooks have been removed from Academic Complete, mainly due to content ownership changes, about 8,000 are Elsevier titles. Elsevier claimed they added these titles to the package in Dec. 2020 in error. This removal affects not only UC, but also other ANZ universities.

Here are the removal title lists — Elsevier and Other publishers.

In partnership with Serials Solutions, LAC staff are currently working on removing MARC records of these eBooks from Horizon/MultiSearch. If subject librarians and Customer Services team come across these eBooks with dead link, please send the request to acquisitions@libr.canterbury.ac.nz. We could purchase the eBook(s) asap depends on cohort or individual use.

In the meantime, about 80 withdrawn titles have been identified we would like to purchase for continued access, based on 50+ uses in the last 12 months. Most of these titles we will purchase from Elsevier or other direct publisher are DRM-free with unlimited user access.

Kanopy PDA Program Update

Kanopy PDA (Patron Driven Acquisition) program is turned off during summer break, but we could continue having access to those Kanopy videos which we currently have had licences.

The main reason for this is recreational use likely to grow over this time, which could cost library a lot of money potentially.

User requests for Kanopy videos in PDA program will be sent to Library Access & Collections for mediation during this period.

We will turn Kanopy PDA program back on when the new semester begins.
