A full remove and reload of our Demand Driven Acquisition (DDA) eBook bib records

To tidy up our DDA eBook bib records on Horizon, we are going to do a full remove and reload of our DDA titles with the assistance of ProQuest and EBSCO (YBP). To minimise the interruption, this will be done during the mid-semester break.

The impact on our users and workflow would be:

  1. Access to these titles will not be available for approximately 48 hours – from approximately this Friday afternoon to Sunday evening. Access to the new file of records will be available next Monday morning.
  2. We will remove all MARC DDA discovery records from our catalogue tomorrow.
  3. We will load the new, large file of bibliographical records into our catalogue on Monday.

Taylor & Francis 2018 Evidence Based Selection (EBS) eBook program

The library is doing another round of the T&F EBS eBook program in 2018. With EBS, UC students and staff can access 489 Taylor & Francis DRM free eBooks across a wide range of subjects for 12 months. At the end of that period (Feb. 2019), we will use the usage data collected to select and buy the most popular titles up to the amount we pre-paid.

Selected content includes titles withdrawn from Academic Complete that have had high use, DDA titles with 2 or more short term loans, and T&F titles published from 2016.

Access To Own (ATO) – new Demand-Driven-Acquisition (DDA) eBook

Our current DDA programme is set up so that the ebook is mediated after 3 short term loans (STL),  then we will  purchase this ebook at full price in most cases. We are paying STL fees plus the full eBook price. With ATO, we will be charged 55% of the cost of the ebook for the 1st use and another 55% for the 2nd use, then UC owns the eBook with perpetual access.

The trigger for this change is because Taylor and Francis one of our most heavily used eBook publishers is moving its current content away from the DDA model on 30th June 2017 but is making it available in the ATO model. CRC Press is also making their current content available only via ATO.

In a couple of weeks,  about 5600 ATO ebooks from Taylor & Francis and CRC front list will be added to our library catalogue.

We will monitor ATO expenditure and review if the spent gets out of control.

Below is a link to a case study at Swinburne University of Technology in Australia which provides some insights into how ATO is working there.

eBook changes – ProQuest eBook Central, Academic Complete and Taylor & Francis

As foreshadowed in December, we now have access to 538 Taylor & Francis DRM free eBooks through T&F’s evidence-based selection model. Selected content is based on “just in time”, high use and recent publications. They include titles withdrawn from Academic Complete that have had high use (40+ uses), DDA titles with a minimum of 2 short term loans, and T&F titles published from 2015.

Evidence-based Selection allows us try before we buy and includes a year of access to our selected content for a minimal up-front fee. At year’s end we could purchase those titles with high usage up to the amount we pre-paid.

Related to this change, we have also reduced our patron-driven (PDA or DDA) profile to focus on currently published material (2016->) leaving Academic Complete to provide access to material published in 2015 or earlier.
