Last Friday the fire alarms sounded at 8.03am and the building was evacuated. The cause was determined by the fire service to be a smoke detector in the foyer, so this will be investigated further.
When the Central Library is evacuated, the assistance of library staff (and staff from other departments) who are not involved in the evacuation process itself is greatly appreciated. What is most useful is if you can:
• assist in keeping the main steps free from people;
• encourage those waiting to move away from the exits to the assembly areas;
• and prevent people from entering the building from any of the exit points until the ‘all clear’ is given. The ‘all clear’ may not be when the alarms cease to sound. A message will be relayed from the building warden or security giving the ‘all clear’.
This assistance is self-initiated and self-directed but is very useful in a building of this size and capacity.
Any questions, please let me know.
Thanks
Isabel
