Evacuation of James Hight Building

Last Friday the fire alarms sounded at 8.03am and the building was evacuated. The cause was determined by the fire service to be a smoke detector in the foyer, so this will be investigated further.

When the Central Library is evacuated, the assistance of library staff (and staff from other departments) who are not involved in the evacuation process itself is greatly appreciated. What is most useful is if you can:
• assist in keeping the main steps free from people;
• encourage those waiting to move away from the exits to the assembly areas;
• and prevent people from entering the building from any of the exit points until the ‘all clear’ is given. The ‘all clear’ may not be when the alarms cease to sound. A message will be relayed from the building warden or security giving the ‘all clear’.
This assistance is self-initiated and self-directed but is very useful in a building of this size and capacity.
Any questions, please let me know.
Thanks

Network problems

Hi all

ICTS are aware that students are having problems logging on. Also that at EFTPOS loading facilities are currently unavailable. Please help students load money onto their account via credit card if this is possible, or print/photocopy for them if these problems are causing significant stress.

Thanks

Central Library – change from academic to summer hours

Hi all

From Saturday 15th November 2014 until Sunday 22nd February 2015 the Central Library opening hours are:

Saturday 1-5pm
Sunday 1-5pm
Monday: 8.30am-9.00pm
Tuesday: 8.30am-9.00pm
Wednesday: 8.30am-9.00pm
Thursday: 8.30am-9.00pm
Friday: 8.30am-5.00pm

In particular:
1. Daily – if you commence work before 8.30am you will need to access Puaka-James Hight building via the staff door (behind the Shilling Club, or main lifts at L1).

2. On Fridays – if you finish work after 5pm, you will need to exit the building via the staff stairs/exit or main lifts to Level 1. The ‘emergency door release’ button at the main entrance internal doors must not be used to exit the building unless it is an emergency.
3. The Central library will also be closed to students/staff on Friday 12th December at 1pm as library staff are having their Christmas function. Please enter and exit the building after this time using the staff stairs/exit or the main lifts to Level 1. If you have appointments you may need to arrange to meet visitors outside the building and escort them in and out.

4. The Central Library will be open as normal on Monday 22nd December, and will close at 5pm on Tuesday 23rd December.

If you are uncertain of the location of staff stairs and exits please let me know, I am happy to show you.

Thanks

City Mission Foodbank ‘Brown Paper Bag’ Appeal

The Central Library received a Christchurch City Mission Bag this week with our copy of the Press as part of the Mission’s Brown Paper Bag Appeal for non-perishable goods and it would be great if we participated in the drive. If you would like to contribute some groceries, please add to the bag located in the Level 5 Tearoom or send them to us via the hampers.

Suggested items from the text on the bag “Rice, soups, soap, sugar, cereals, spreads, teabags, baby food, toilet rolls, toothpaste, milk powder, pasta and sauces, washing powder, canned fish and meat, biscuits, crackers, baked beans and spaghetti, canned fruit and vegetables”….

Reminder: Replacing Lost Books with Own Copy

Hi all

Just a reminder when advising borrowers who have lost a library item, that we can only accept a replacement copy from them if it matches the lost item exactly (eg same publisher, edition etc). And, if they wish to provide us with an exact replacement, that this needs to be done very promptly, otherwise the automated process of moving the lost book to library invoice and finance invoice stage will continue.

Any questions, let me know.
Thanks

ICTS Problem for students with negative balances

Hi all

ICTS are working on resolving a problem for students with negative balances.
Yesterday, there was a software failure which means that students with negative balances who try and top up are unable to do this.

From our perspective, please assist these students in every way possible to gain access to resources or print items that are urgent.

There is no ETA to resolve this issue, however it is being worked on as high priority by ICTS staff.

Many thanks
Isabel
