Health and Safety

H & S Induction

Wednesday 16th February at 11.20am will be the first Health and Safety induction for new staff for 2021.

This is in two sections. The first is walk around the PJH building to think about the work environment when the need arises to evacuate the building and, secondly, Health and Safety for completely new staff.

Most staff participated in the refresher walk arounds last year but there may be people who missed out last year or would like another session  so please feel free to come along.

Ergonomics

Ergonomic issues are a risk for library staff but with good use of desks, computers, keyboards and mice, the risks are easy to mitigate. The UC online ergonomic assessment tool is a good guide to the basic requirements for being comfortable at your work station.

Earthquake

Monday February 22nd is the 10th Anniversary of our 2011 Christchurch earthquake. Wikipedia has a big page on the Christchurch Earthquakes and there are a lot of books in the library about the event.

Health and Safety Refresher 2020

A Health and Safety Refresher is due for all staff every two years.

The purpose of a refresher is to reinforce the actions we all need to take in the unlikely event of an emergency. We need to be aware of the way the building is set up to assist in dealing with evacuations.

The first refresher for this year will be on Thursday 13th February  (11.30-12.00noon).

Please meet in Room 203 (PJH) at 11.30am.

The refresher will consist of a walk around thinking about the building as a disaster zone (not the building in terms of being a library).

Two years ago the Library Health and Safety Committee offered an online option for the refresher. This will be available again after some editing to bring it up to date. The online option is designed to a be a 15 minute module covering all the basic points of Health and Safety in relation to the Library. When the module is available there will be two options for the 2020 Library Health and Safety Refresher training.

Staff may prefer to wait for the shorter option. I will also schedule another  walk around refresher later in the month.

Photo shoot

A photo shoot to get new photos for the Library website is happening today. Corey (the UC photographer) is taking photos with some of our lovely casual staff and Library staff. There will be activity throughout Puaka-James Hight all morning.

Thanks to everyone who is helping out. The website will look all spangly new as a result. Ta!

I’m outta here

Hi All!

For those of you that haven’t heard, I have been offered a position at van Asch Deaf Education Centre. I’ll be their e-Learning guy doing all sort of cool things but mostly working on professional development for primary and secondary teachers / hanging out at the beach.

Its all very exciting and was a hard decision to make but I think it will be the best for me, my family and career.

My last day will the the 5th of October, so make sure you get all your gifts, marriage proposals and tears to me before then.

PJH lights

Facilities Management are currently involved in a job to replace all the fluorescent tubes on level 11 and level 4. The reason for this is that the tubes are at the end of their lives. They can be on for up to 17 or 18 hours a day which over time adds up quickly to the expected life of the tube. They also tend to fade a bit as they get older, before they flicker and die.

Otherwise I have a BIEMS request in to replace dead tubes on the other floors. FM find it easier to come to the library to replace more than one tube at a time.

FM  will come over to replace individual tubes if they are emergency lights or crucial for other reasons, eg in stairwells or over a work area. Otherwise the odd dead tube can wait to be done after a regular check of all the lights in the building about once every six months or so.
