Psyc 207 Assignment

I am away until Thursday 23 April. There is a PSYC 207 assignment due at the end of April. If students need help in my absence, below are the topics and suggested searches on PsycINFO.

Set the following limits for all of the topics:
Age: Childhood & School age
Publication type: peer reviewed journal
Methodology: Empirical Study

Bullying is normal and children can cope with it.
Try:
bullying and childhood development
bullying and coping behavior
bullying and emotional responses
bullying and risk factors

Correlational studies can’t help us explain children’s developmental phenomena.I would recommend finding research articles that use correlational analyses and then look at the limitations outlined in the study.

Try:
correlation* and infant development (SU) OR childhood development (SU)
correlation* and test validity (SU) and infant development (SU) OR childhood development (SU)
statistical correlation (SU)
methodology or empirical methods (SU) AND infant development (SU) OR childhood development (SU)

Children don’t change much as they get older

Try:
Childhood development and nature nurture
Childhood development and change (SU)
Childhood development and behavioral genetics
Childhood development and psychosocial development

The student could also limit the search to Longitudinal studies (study done over a period of time to track change). Select Longitudinal study from Methodology window on Advanced Search screen.

Thanks
Kerry

Fire evacuation procedures

Thank you to all staff who assisted in the fire evacuation this morning. Our total time for the evacuation was 7.5 minutes. That is considered acceptable but we will try and do better next time.

Evacuation paddles
Please remember that if you are closest to a paddle when the alarm goes off please take one and follow the instructions for clearing the floor. After the area is cleared bring the paddle to the control point on level one and hang it on the hook.

Since the James Hight building is quite large there is no expectation that all the paddles will necessarily arrive but those on the staffed areas of level 5, 3 and 2 should almost always be collected as there is staff on those areas during office hours.

This morning three level 2 paddles were left behind. During a real emergency the paddles are a crucial source of information for the fire service. The more areas that are cleared on our way out means the less number of areas for the fire service to be concerned about before they get on with the real business.
No paddle routine should take more than a couple of minutes.

Extended Hours
During extended hours the paddle system is suspended although the staff on level two are expected to be vigilant for those on their way out of the building. The supervisor automatically assumes the role of the building warden and will go immediately after ringing 111 to the control point on level one to meet with Security and the fire Service.

Thanks
Tim O’Sullivan.

Printing in L5 Training Room

The printer in the L5 Training Room is a hot spare for the Loft and belongs to ICTS. The printing levels are very low and the printer is old and costly to run. When the Loft printers are replaced by Ricoh, this printer will be retired. Anyone using the L5 Training Room PCs will need to go to the Loft to pick up their printing or chose another place to print. An item will be put on Counterculture when this happens.

New Zealand Time Series Database

Econ 105 students need NZ Time Series Database to complete their first assignments. This year, students do not need to install the software DX for Windows in order to use the database as the software is preinstalled on their students’ logins if they are using the PCs in the Library except the Loft ones. If you are asked about this database, tell the student/s to go to Library databases page to access this database. Cuiying
