Hamper runs on Orientation Day

Due to health and safety considerations there will be no hamper runs on Orientation Day, Friday 17th February 2017. The mail and courier runs will be moved to the afternoon and interloan materials will actioned at this time.

If there are any urgent requests requiring an item to moved between libraries this will need to be completed by library staff.

Thank you

Tuesday 11 October

I’ve been wanting to play with the data ICTS collects on wireless connections in the library for a while. Dave Lane kindly gathered all the logs for Tuesday the 11th of October from ICTS.  We got 7 million lines of logs, and I wrote some code to extract this:

2 (1)

This is pretty rough: it indicates unique wireless devices connecting to library based access points every hour.  that means if someone was sitting in level 4 of James Hight, their laptop or phone would be counted once an hour.  If they moved up to level 5 at 10:30, it would be counted once on level 4, and then once on level 5.  It includes staff and students.

Tuesday the 11th of October was the last week of term, so there was a lot of studying and assignment writing going on!

There is a lot more that could be done with this data, but I think this provides an interesting ‘proof of concept’ of data we already collect, and can question for all sorts of purposes.

File and network disruptions Tuesday night

Library Staff working during the evening on Tuesday (26th January) will lose access to the Wiki (Camelot) and the K: and U: drives.

Students will not be able to do a Canterbury Card Top-UP or Canterbury Card printing.

An edited version of the memo from ITS follows:

On Tuesday the 26 th January starting at 5:30pm we will be doing maintenance work on our main file server. This will mean a number of central systems will not be available, including Learn and Echo 360. For a complete list see below

In order to minimise the risk of loss of data we ask that all users logout before they go home on Tuesday.

Trial Evacuation Tuesday 14th September Puaka-James Hight

The trail evacuation yesterday was completed in 8 minutes and 4 seconds which considering the number of people in the Building was a good result.

Thank you to all those who acted as floor wardens to clear your areas. After  a floor warden has reported to the building warden and marked their floor clear they should keep the armband on and go to the front steps of the library to help keep the students from re entering until the all-clear is given. Floor wardens should also be prepared to go to the other entrances of the library as well. Half way through the evacuation it appeared that students were still trying to enter the building at the east entrance (next to A1-3.)

Apart from that small quibble, it was a well run evacuation. Thanks everyone.

P-JH Building Warden.

Central library evacuation procedures

The camelot page http://wiki.canterbury.ac.nz/display/LIBRSTAFF/Central+Library+Evacuation+Procedure
outlining evacuation procedures for the James hight Building has been updated. This page outlines the procedures to be undertaken whenever the James Hight building the fire alarms sound.
If you are on one of the upper levels of the library in the event of an alarm please be prepared to uplift a paddle from the East lift bay and clear the floor. There are also new evacuation information signs throughout the library. null
