Fendalton Library book

We have just received a load of unclaimed lost propery books from Security. One of them was a Fendalton Library book which has been in lost property for several months. I have contacted Fendalton and they will let the borrower know that they should collect ‘The Small business book’ from Central Library Lending desk & return it to Fendalton Library.
The books is in the Troublesome books tray at CKI – just hand it over.

VUW student cards and ULANZ registration

We have seen a couple of Victoria University students recently who have presented barcodeless student cards for ULANZ registration. Our programme requires a barcode to be scanned in, so this is a practical problem. The response from VUW is:

“Victoria University ID cards should all have a pre-printed Library barcode. It appears that this year a number of ID cards were produced without pre-printed barcodes. VUW does not issue student ID cards for the equivalent of “culturally enrolled” students so you can safely assume that if a VUW student has a current ID card (or current expiration sticker) they are officially enrolled at VUW.”

Lending and Reader Services advise they are able to assist any VUW students by ‘sending a barcode via mail’. I am hoping this barcode can be stuck on their card. Please ask any other VUW students in this situation to contact VUW Lending and Reader Services if they wish to register as reciprocal borrowers.

Barcode placement

Self check machines rely on front barcodes being positioned correctly so that the scanner can read them. Too many rebarcoded items are not readable because the barcode has been placed too high for the depth of the Self Check cradle. This forces borrowers to have these books issued at the desk. If you do not have a cardboard template for positioning the barcode, Helen can provide one.

Choosing a hamper

Education Library report that over the last couple of days they have found a high number of items destined for EPS in their hamper. While returns at Central Library were huge on Wednesday and may have contributed to the high error rate – please take care to put transit items in the correct hamper (as per the transit slip).

Interfering browsers

Library IT have made a change to the two icons that open Payment Plus and ULANZ/CTA registration programmes on the Central Library Lending Desk PCs. Payment Plus will open IE and ULANZ/CTA will open Firefox.
This will prevent the ‘interference’ between the two programmes opening on a single browser which caused the ‘Access denied’ message or that closed down Payment Plus.
Please note that Firefox authentication screen looks a bit different, but still requires the normal Username/Password to be entered first.

New Casual Staff at Central

We have three new casual staff members at Central here is a brief bio on each of them.

Katherine Moody:
“I am a casual assistant (Extended Hours) working on the issue desks of all libraries on campus. I am also a casual shop assistant at the Air Force Museum of New Zealand. I moved from the UK to New Zealand in 2009 and most recently worked with the Department of Printed Books at the Imperial War Museum answering enquiries and assisting researchers in the Reading Room.

I have also worked at the RAF Museum, Hendon, in the Department of Research and Information Services and in the Department of Printed Books at the National Army Museum, Chelsea.”

Stephanie Radley:
“As a student I find working in the University great. It’s fun to interact with students studying in different subject areas. It is also great to be working right on campus, No excuses for not studying!

I am currently finishing up a Master of Arts in Philosophy and I hope to continue as a philosophy tutor in Semester one.”

Lanmai Zhang:
“Hi everyone, my name is Lanmai Zhang. I am from Zhe Jiang- an eastern coastal province of China. I am a final year student at UC. This is my first time working in UC’s library as a casual assistant. The main benefit for me in this position, is that I get to work and learn from experienced staff at the library. After the well trained program, I feel more confident to give my support to staff as well as students. The study experience I gained in the past few years, allow me to understand what problems the new students might be facing. What drove me to apply as an casual assistant, is so that I can help to take away some of the confusion, that many new students feel from being in an unfamiliar environment. Hopefully this will make their first year of university study more enjoyable.”
