Database Updates

Wiley InterScience
Wiley Online Library will be launched in the weekend and will completely replace Wiley InterScience. From 8pm Saturday 7 August until the new Wiley Online Library is available at 4am Sunday 8 August there will be no access to journals or eBooks. Users will be directed to an interim page until the new site is live. More information

SpringerLink
On Saturday 7 August the new SpringerLink interface will replace the current interface. There may be a short period of downtime but interruptions will be kept to a minimum. After the launch there will be continuous development of the site with regular future releases introducing new features.

Gale
Gale has replaced their Resource Centers with In Context resources. This applies to Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center, Student Resource Center and History Resource Center, which are now known as Opposing Viewpoints in Context, Student Resources in Context and World History in Context. Biography Resource Center will be upgraded late August/early September and will be enhanced with portals pages, biography-specific search boxes and enhanced search results pages.

At the same time, all In Context products will be enhanced with interactive maps, customisable order of contents, customisable homepage news, optional Lexile reading levels display and optional ReadSpeaker.

Engineering Village
This month the Scopus Cited By count for every abstract will appear in Compendex. A Cited by in Scopus link will appear to the right of the Abstract, Detailed Abstract and/or Full-Text view. More information

Springer Online Journal Archives

We now have 3 more Springer backfile collections:

• Chemistry and Materials Science – 80 titles
• Computer Science – 96 titles
• Physics and Astronomy – 73 titles

This gives us access to all Springer Online Journal Archives collections except Medicine.

Title lists can be found on the Springer Online Archives Collection page. Titles will be available via the Journals page tomorrow and added to the Catalogue early next month.

WorldCat has introduced 2 new features:

“Find a Book”
WorldCat has teamed up with MetaMetrics to offer “Find a Book” to help connect readers with books appropriate for their reading level using the popular Lexile Framework for Reading. WorldCat Blog

WorldCat Genres
WorldCat Genres allows you to browse dozens of genres for hundreds of titles, authors, subjects, characters, locations, and more, ranked by popularity in the world’s libraries. It is a joint experiment from OCLC Research and the WorldCat.org team.

E-Resources Updates

Journal Citation Reports
2009 Journal Citation Reports (JCR) have been released. The 2009 JCR includes 861 journals making a total of more than 9,100 peer-reviewed publications. Included in 2009’s release are features that help evaluate the journal data in context:
• Five-Year Impact Factor (1,055 journals receive their first calculated Journal Impact Factors)
• Eigenfactor Metrics
• Rank-in-Category Tables
• Journal “Self-Citations”

Oxford English Dictionary
Later this year there will be some major changes to the OED Online. The relaunched OED site will contain an integrated online edition of the Historical Thesaurus of the OED. This means, for instance, that a user viewing the entry for halberd (the early modern weapon combining a spear and a battle-axe) can click to reach the related entries langue de boeuf, glaive, budge, poleaxe, ox-tongue, and partisan—to list only those first recorded between 1450 and 1611. Other functionality and content will also be added.

Emerald
Emerald has introduced the first in a series of improvements. Recent improvements include: clearer style and layout of all web pages; improved and more consistent navigation; clearer Search and Advanced Search screens; clearer Browse options; Quick Browse on Home page to latest issue of a journal chosen from drop down list; clearer symbols to show which content is accessible; “Related items” functionality on document request pages.

Later this year there will be further enhancements, including: e-mail alerts and RSS; reference linking; marked lists; help pages; document updates (PDF & HTML); authentication.

SpringerOpen

Springer has launched a series of open access journals. Articles published in these journals will be freely available online under the Creative Commons Attribution License. Articles published in SpringerOpen journals will also be sent automatically to participating institutional repositories via BioMed Central’s automated SWORD deposit mechanism.

The SpringerOpen journals will complement Springer’s existing titles and BioMed Central’s growing portfolio of 200+ open access journals in medicine and life science. The first SpringerOpen journals, which will open for submissions shortly, are:
