Test and tag results

Thanks to everyone who helped with the test and tag procedure last Thursday.

Stu tested and tagged 277 items, 32 in EPS, 40 in MB and 205 in Central library. The spreadsheet of items tested is saved here: K:\LIBR-Library\Health-Safety\Portable-appliance-register\Copy of Canty Uni Libraries August 2018 from Stu (Test and Tag).xlsx

Only one item was declined. It was an extension cord that looked like it came off the ark.

Just a reminder that any personal electrical items brought to work should be tested and tagged beforehand.

DPI Tip for August 2018: Feeling stretched?

It’s one of life’s little paradoxes…when we’re feeling overly stretched, that’s a very good time to stop and do some stretches.

A reminder of a couple of options for daily (Monday-Friday) group exercise sessions available to Puaka-James Hight staff and anyone else who’d like to join us:

Library Access & Collections (Room 519): 11.30am

E-Learning and LT&R teams (Room 522): 3pm

Visitors always welcome.

Please let us know of any other group exercise sessions happening in your area.

You may find this list of exercises useful.

Electrical Equipment Testing

The Library Health and Safety Committee is working on getting all library equipment tested and tagged according to the UC protocol. This is scheduled for the week beginning Monday 13th August with the exact day to be confirmed.

Many of the electrical items in the library have been noted to have no tag or out of date tags. The UC IT department arrange to test and tag all computer equipment and photocopiers before installation but the library has to ensure that all other electrical equipment is tested, eg laminators, electric staplers, urns, multi-boxes, fridges, fans, heaters, etc.

If you have personal items that you plug in at work, the UC protocol also requires that they are tested and tagged before they are brought onto campus. This applies to all items connecting to the power supply with a standard NZ three pin plug or adapter.

In the UC  libraries the following people will be contacts for the process:

MB: Swee Hoon

EPS: Dave Lane

Central (L2): Tim O’Sullivan

Central (L5): Helen Thomas

As far as I know there should not be equipment in our storage areas that needing testing but there may be extension cords or other items like that lying around that will need to be tested.  If there is a small number of items in the storage areas then the reps will collect them and have them done when the main areas are done. If not then I will arrange with the tagger to visit the storage areas.

If you can think of items that need to have tagged please add a comment to this post or let the Reps know.

DPI tip for July

Just a reminder about the University’s online ergonomic self-assessment tool (which also happens to star members of the Library team!)  It’s a great place to assess and just refresh your workstation setup before you start experiencing pain or discomfort.  Other options for ergonomic assessment are possible too – you can also request one of the trained ergonomic assessors to come and visit.  For more details on this see the Health and Safety intranet pages.

PJH lights

Facilities Management are currently involved in a job to replace all the fluorescent tubes on level 11 and level 4. The reason for this is that the tubes are at the end of their lives. They can be on for up to 17 or 18 hours a day which over time adds up quickly to the expected life of the tube. They also tend to fade a bit as they get older, before they flicker and die.

Otherwise I have a BIEMS request in to replace dead tubes on the other floors. FM find it easier to come to the library to replace more than one tube at a time.

FM  will come over to replace individual tubes if they are emergency lights or crucial for other reasons, eg in stairwells or over a work area. Otherwise the odd dead tube can wait to be done after a regular check of all the lights in the building about once every six months or so.
