Reporting Health and Safety events

Kia ora koutou,

Remember the Health and Safety Toolkit on the intranet? If not, you may want to glance here and remind yourself of its full glory.

Anyway, part of that kete is the method for reporting events. Overall, for the Library we are very good at reporting, but we should be doing better at using the online form (RMSS) rather than the Word document. If we use the RMSS, we get enhanced reporting, ability to analyse and reflect on our incidents, etc. From now on, your H&S team would like to see all events logged using RMSS rather than the form. If this causes issues, please discuss that with a member of the Library H&S team.

Micropauses

Our concentration levels drop every now and again, so why not take a short break for 2-3 minutes, then get back to the task at hand with renewed energy and focus.

Get up and walk around, say hi to a colleague, grab a drink of water, stand up and do some stretches, relax those arms and shoulders.

If only we could relax as easily and effortlessly as cats!

Afternoon stretches in Room 522 (Central Library) starting Wednesday

Hi All,

Following LAC’s lead we are now going to start afternoon stretches in Room 522 (eLearning / Subject Librarians) in addition to those in the morning in LAC.

Our plan is to start these each day from Wednesday 14th June.

Time – 3pm each day. We’ll ring a bell when it’s time.

If you are in Central, please consider joining us.

Also if you are doing stretches in another library can you please post the time and location below!

Theresa and Anton.

Health and Safety update

The UC Learning Resources health and Safety committee, which includes the library, met last week. There are a few things that will be of interest.

The emergency flip chart outlining what to do in various situations is being updated and any suggestions can be sent through to jacqui.lyttle@canterbury.ac.nz

Security are keen to keep people aware that if there is a medical emergency then they should be called first on ext. 6111. They will respond immediately with first aid equipment and a defibrillator. If necessary the Health Centre will be called and Security will also call an ambulance. Security will coordinate the arrival of the ambulance on to campus as quickly as possible. This is the most effective way of getting the ambulance as there have been cases in the past where the ambulance crew have spent fifteen minutes driving around campus looking for the emergency.
In the unlikely event of a power cut the university has generators which  will keep essential services such as locked doors and crucial fridges running but the emergency generator system can not run the whole university. The library has emergency closure guidelines here: K:\LIBR-Library\Health-Safety\Emergency-closure-guidelines

Fire Extinguisher and Evacuation training

If you have not yet attended the Evacuation training, or its been over two years since your last training, we have a new, combined, Evacuation and Fire Extinguisher training session coming up next Monday 10 April. The morning session (9am-11.30am) only has a couple of spaces left, but the afternoon session (12.30pm -3.00pm) still has spaces.

The training is facilitated by Sean Yeates, from Fire Fighting Pacific. He spent many years in the UK Fire Service and more recently was stationed down in Dunedin. He has plenty of first-hand knowledge to share and the hands-on experience actually using Fire Extinguishers is always a very worthwhile experience (and quite fun). I found this training increased my confidence in managing evacuations, and more importantly gave me confidence to pick up an extinguisher and use it if necessary.

The enrolment form is at the top of the H&S training page https://intranet.canterbury.ac.nz/hs/info-training/index.shtml if you would like to join Sean on Monday . Training is in the Erskine building and the Fire Extinguisher hands-on exercise is outside (rain or shine).

Places are limited so please get your enrolment form to us as soon as possible. The final training session for 2017 follows the September trial evacuations, and is in October.
