Elsevier Metrics Workshop

The Information Resources Working Group is interested in trialling a product called SciVal from Elsevier.  Blurb from Elsevier about what SciVal is: “SciVal enables you to visualize research performance, benchmark relative to peers, develop collaborative partnerships and analyze research trends.”

We’re looking at doing a trial of SciVal in August/September.  As part of the trial Elsevier would like to come and deliver a 3 hour Metrics workshop on Monday 28th August 9-12pm which will be in Room 210, Puaka-James Hight.

Please register your interest for this workshop.  Colleagues from other areas (eg Research Office) most welcome.

Continuing Resources Review update

Kia ora Subject Librarians,

Following preparation of data by the LAC team, we are now at the second stage of the Continuing Resources Review which is checking high cost/download titles before we send them out to the LLOs for wider comment.

The Review will support the UC Goal of managing our resources wisely.

Specifically, outcomes we desire from the Review are:

  1. Identification and Cancellation of titles no longer required to support UC, learning, teaching and research
  2. Freeing up funds to support new and changing needs at UC

We are requesting your input on checking the high cost/download titles by 31st May

Access the list of high cost per download titles here

The criteria for “high cost” is any subscription costing over $20 per download.  These titles should be seriously considered for cancellation.

This involves:

  • Checking the titles in your area
  • Commenting on any titles you don’t think should be reviewed and sent to the LLOs with a view to their cancellation (and why)
  • Commenting on anything that is unclear, may need amending or where you need more information.

At this stage we are just providing you with the eJournals – print titles still to come

LAC staff are still working on the print titles and we will be releasing these for your comments shortly.  We will be treating print and standing order titles differently this year – more on this to come.

How to make comments on the titles

Other notes

  • Data is from 2016 payments and usage statistics
  • Data from the 2014 and 2015 reviews is available here
  • We’re happy to meet with any groups or individuals to provide more background – just send a meeting request
  • Multi-disciplinary databases and packages will be considered separately (last year’s discussion on Web of Science and JCR along with the recent discussion on Compendex are examples of that).  The packages are generally well under the $20 cost/download mark.
  • Information on the Review will also be provided at the LLO meeting next week.

New recommendations

Successful new recommendations are dependent on our ability to make cancellations and savings elsewhere including through this review exercise.  Decisions on new subs are normally made in September.  We are trialling a new SharePoint form where you can submit your recommendations.  Comments on the form are most welcome.

Many thanks for your assistance,

APA referencing style and DOI format

From March 2017, the APA style editors are recommending the latest DOI format, as recommended by Crossref.

This new new format looks like
https://doi.org/………
(the Library’s APA style pages are updated to this now)

You may recall the old new format, that looks like
http://dx.doi.org/……..

Or the old old format, that looks like
doi:…………..
(and this is what EndNote will output with the APA output style “out of the box”)

All these formats are still valid, so the main thing to tell students is to use one format and stick with it within an assignment.

Link to the posting on the APA Style blog announcing this change.

Open Access Fund

We have recently put out a call for applications for the Open Access Fund, and have received several submissions from academic staff and postgraduate students.

If you are asked about the fund you can direct staff and students to the Open Access page in the Research – Scholarly Publication Subject Guide, at http://canterbury.libguides.com/scholarly/OA. This page contains instructions about how to apply, lists the application criteria, and contains a link to the application form.

Hamper runs on Orientation Day

Due to health and safety considerations there will be no hamper runs on Orientation Day, Friday 17th February 2017. The mail and courier runs will be moved to the afternoon and interloan materials will actioned at this time.

If there are any urgent requests requiring an item to moved between libraries this will need to be completed by library staff.

Thank you

Two interesting talks next week

Chris Thompson from English writes:

[…]

Eric Meyer from the Oxford Internet Institute will be here on 24 and 25th November, and will be giving a talk on his book Knowledge Machines (2015; with Ralph Schroeder) at 2pm on Thursday 24th in KP612.

He will also present a workshop entitled “Metrics and Measurement: the Impacts of Digital Resources and Collections” from 9am-12pm on 25 November. I expect this will be highly relevant to many of you. It is a workshop he will deliver at National Digital Forum, so this is a great opportunity for those who (like me) can’t go to the conference to attend. The workshop will take place in Macmillan Brown PS 208, and morning tea will be provided. Please RSVP to me by Monday 21st November if you plan to attend.

I’ve attached further details of both the talk and the workshop. Please pass these on to any colleagues who may be interested.

Best wishes,
Chris

Volunteers Needed for Trial of 15 Minute Online Workshop

Kathryn, Kim, Jan and I have put together a short 15 minute online class on placing and removing a hold. We need some staff volunteers to help us test it before we offer it to students next month. If you’re free, please register for the workshop with the link below. Kathryn, Kim and I will be presenting the workshop. All feedback on the online format and the actual content of the workshop will be gratefully received! 🙂

The day before the workshop you’ll be sent a reminder email with the link to the online workshop using Adobe Connect. It also has instructions for testing Adobe Connect. Please do this test the day before the workshop so that you are ready for the actual workshop on the day.
