Kia ora Koutou,

With Ryan moving into a fixed-term role as Team Leader for the ELS team, Te Rua Makerspace has an opportunity for an Assistant Librarian Learning.

We are now opening expressions of interest for this role from interested members of the library team. It will be a fixed-term, 37.5 hour per week Band 3 role and will go through to October 18, 2024.

If you have always wanted to work in the Makerspace, help students realise their creative potential as well as boost their well-being and contribute to an overall more rounded experience of university, please feel free to talk with Jessica or Ryan for more information on the role. If you wish to submit an EoI please email it to me with your attached CV by 5:00 p.m. Tuesday 14 May.

Attached in the Teams post version of this message (Library All Staff > General), is the Position Description for your reference and a copy of the Makerspace plan for the next two years.

Thanks to Tracey Robinson for updating us on the new provider of Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) services to the University at our Staff Fora last week. TELUS are a Canadian company, who provide counselling and other support for UC staff and their whānau.

Student Room Booking System moving to TimeEdit

The current library discussion room booking system is moving to TimeEdit on Monday 13 May.  Important things to know below.

  • Existing bookings between 12-19 May are being migrated onto TimeEdit
  • Existing bookings from 20 May onwards, will be cancelled.  Students will need to re-book on TimeEdit
  • ALL users with existing bookings will be emailed and notified what the change means for them
  • TimeEdit allows users to book up to 15 hours per week in total. Each room can be booked for maximum of 3 hours.
  • Some library staff will have admin rights in TimeEdit to cancel bookings or close rooms.
  • TimeEdit will go live later this week, so students can start booking on the new system
  • Webpage links to the current Room Booking pages will be updated Monday morning
  • Information posters will be put in all the Library Discussion rooms

Staff room bookings for library teaching/consultation spaces is being moved to a different system.  Contact Kim Hall for details

Update from Kat

Kia ora koutou

I’m keen to share an update with you all.
Firstly, I want to underscore how wonderful it is to be back with you all onsite for part-time hours this week!  I’ve deeply appreciated your cheery welcomes and smiley kia oras, as I get back into the groove.
I’d also like to express my enormous gratitude to you all for covering my recent absence with total aplomb and tireless effort!  Noting in particular the formal delegations in place with Helen as Acting UL, Sara as Acting AUL, Kim as Acting Manager – L&T and Kathryn providing additional cover for Kim, with additional support by you all and by the management team.

I’m happy to report complete success on my breast cancer surgery, with no further treatments required and my recovery continuing to go well.  Yay!

However, during the operation I had a troublesome mole removed from my left arm, which has turned out to be melanoma.  I’m now therefore starting diagnostics for skin cancer, and have surgery booked next Monday 6 May for excision and biopsy work.  Recovery time is one week, so I will be back Monday 13 May onwards in a fulltime capacity.

To provide ongoing cover, we’ve extended the formal delegations noted above.  These will run through to Monday 13 May.  Thank you Helen, Sara, Kim and Kathryn for this.

Also ngā mihi nui to you all for your ongoing support and well wishes!  I’m looking forward so much to coming back, being back and staying back with you all in due course.

PJH Music material on the move

All the music collection is being moved from Level 6 of PJH up to Level 7.  More details below

  • includes miniature scores and the call number ranges starting with M, ML, MT
  • Move starts 30/4/2024, but will be done slowly (early in morning until the floors gets busy).  It may take a couple of months.
  • We will update locations on the Catalogue as items are moved
  • Signage will be put up on both floors on the stack ends as items are moved

Visualise Your Thesis Returns!

What is VYT?

Submit a 60-second audio-visual presentation that explains your research project to a general audience and be in to win cash prizes!

What are the prizes?

  • 1st prize – NZ$1000 (& entry into the international Visualise Your Thesis programme)
  • 2nd prize – NZ$500
  • 3rd prize – NZ$250
  • People’s Choice Award – NZ$250

Even further to that…we have an information lunch for them to pop their head in and learn more about the competition – no strings attached!

This lunch is a chance to come and meet the UC Library team and previous VYT competition winners. A free pizza lunch will be provided while we:

  • Hear from previous competition winners.
  • Present a brief rundown of the programme guidelines.
  • And share some tips and tricks for creating your submission.
  • Have some time to talk one-on-one with us and ask any questions you want.
  • As well as network with your post-graduate peers!

new Acting TL for ELS

Kia ora Koutou,

I am very pleased to announce that Ryan will be our new acting team leader while Dale is in the Library Strategy Navigator role.
My thanks to those people who put in an EOI for the secondment, and my congratulations to Ryan on his success.

I know the ELS team is really looking forward to working with you Ryan wearing your new hat over the coming months!

We now of course have a vacancy in Te Rua maker-space! We will be working on an EOI / secondment for this role in the next fortnight or so.

Open Christchurch Architectural Festival (Sunday 5th May 2024)

Kia ora koutou, 

On Sunday the 5th of May between 11am and 2pm, Puaka-James Hight will be joining a number of other UC buildings featuring in the annual city-wide architectural event, Open Christchurch! Open Christchurch is a celebration of architecture and city planning run by Te Pūtahi, Centre for Architecture and City Making. 

As part of our support of this annual event, we will have a display in PJH celebrating its design and architecture, and themed collateral for people to take. Staff will also be hosting our visitors and providing self-guided tours. This is a repeat of what we have run for Open Christchurch in the past. 

The display will be up for a period of time before and after the event, so swing by and have a look! Of special interest this year, we are celebrating the 50th birthday of our beloved Puaka-James Hight building! Plus, we will also be promoting Erin’s ‘Drawing Connections’ exhibition currently being shown at Tūranga, exploring the architectural legacy of Cecil Wood.
