Horizon and catalogue disruptions on Tuesday

Tomorrow, Tuesday 11th April, we are upgrading the systems on which Horizon runs. This is quite a major change – we are moving to a newer version of the Sybase database and Horizon will be running from a new Server.

There will be some disruption although the time-consuming processes will occur before we open

First thing on Tuesday, there will be no Horizon access and the Catalogue will be down. If things go smoothly, I’m hoping that the Self Check machines will be running by 8.30 am.  If you try logging into Horizon you will get error messages.

Your staff machines will need a file updated to connect to the new server. This is scheduled by ITS to happen automatically, but we can’t test this.

Reports will not run until Margaret has amended some of her scripts. This may be quick – but again it is something we haven’t been able to test.

The Catalogue may be running by 9 am but will need to be reindexed which will take a couple more hours.

We’ll provide more details on the day, as events unfold.

Thanks, Peter K

Please do not use Payment Plus to take fine payments at the moment

Hi all

PaymentPlus is still pointing to the previous Horizon database so will not be removing fines from the borrower records on the new live database. We’re working on getting reports up and running (PaymentPlus is a report too) and will let you know when it is safe to use PaymentPlus and other Horizon reports.
Request Pull Lists (from Horizon’s Circulation Reports menu) ok to run.

We will run reports to pick up any PaymentPlus transactions already made today and make sure fines are tidied up on Horizon. You may want to override blocking fines in the meantime.
I’ve added a message about this to the Payments webpage.

Kind Regards

Office 2003 repair: restart your PC at lunchtime or when at tea

The next time your computer starts it will do a reinstallation of Office 2003. This process can take up to 10 minutes which is why we suggest you restart your computer when you are going to lunch, tea or a meeting.

Please, could somebody in each section with a laptop, ensure that laptops are connected and started-up. You don’t want to face this process just before teaching starts.

This very unexciting reinstallation adds nothing new, but is one of the necessary preliminaries for us to move to Office 2007 later in the year.

Endnote users: it may be necessary to run a Repair on Endnote in Add/Remove programs to reinsert the Endnote Toolbar. If, when you start Word for the first time, you get an Endnote error message click on Yes. When Word starts, go to the Help menu and select “About Microsoft Office Word”. Click “Disabled Items”, highlight any Endnote items and click “Enable”. Talk to Library IT if you have ongoing problems.

Thank you, Peter.
