Free shelving

Kia ora koutou

Is anyone interested in taking some of the Lundia shelving from the Library Warehouse? We are due to start installing the new B block in April so now is a chance to take what you want from the old shelving. There will be other opportunities around August as well.

Individual shelves measure 960mm x 290mm but it is possible to remove the framing holding these shelves and reconstruct it (perfect for a garage!). Or feel free to take as many shelves as you like.

Please just send me an email and we can make a plan for anyone keen.

How to report faults or feedback about Folio and MultiSearch

As we all start to delve deeper into our new systems, we will discover things that don’t quite work as expected, or things that we can’t do quite as we used to in our old systems. You will also receive feedback from our students/staff as they start to engage with our new systems. Below I have listed the places you can go to seek help or pass on feedback.

  • Please first check the MLM training page on Sharepoint. There are lots of resources on this page including links to Info Sheets & Guides on the right navigation bar and Listening to the Waka Board which lists know bugs or enhancement requests. It also lists all the Functional Co-Lead staff from the MLM Project
  • Discuss with the Functional Co-Lead for your area to see if this has already been reported.
  • Report any new issues via UC Services Portal – there are 3 new reporting forms relating to FOLIO.   You can use these for MultiSearch as well. You can find the forms by searching for Library in the main search box or under Raise an IT request and selecting Library.
  • If the query is about accessing an electronic resource, please email collections@libr.canterbury.ac.nz
  • If the query is urgent eg. student can’t login, then please contact Library Systems

Technical access issue on Science.org – RESOLVED 28/2

At approximately 12:00 p.m. EST on February 21, 2024, AAAS began to receive notifications from our clients that attempts to access journal content via OpenAthens or Shibboleth resulted in an “Internal Server Error.” After consulting with both OpenAthens and our platform provider, it was determined that the issue is with the Science.org platform, and not with OpenAthens and Shibboleth itself.

We are working directly with Atypon to resolve this issue as quickly as possible. During this time, we recommend accessing your institutional subscriptions to Science journals via IP authentication or VPN/proxy server.

We appreciate your patience and will let you know once the problem is resolved.

Regards,

LAWS205 and CRJU202 legal research content

Kia ora koutou

LLB students in LAWS and BCJ students in CRJU202 are both being set a number of online Library and legal research skills lessons to complete over the next few weeks.

Each of these lessons are designed for these 500+ students to learn how to find legal material within the Library and legal databases.

The students also need to complete a one-change time-limited quiz for the course they are enrolled in:

LAWS205 students – 50 questions in 90 minutes

CRJU202 students – 30 questions in 75 minutes

I have set everything up so that it works on the UC computers but sometimes there are issues due to the multiple moving parts + live databases students do sometimes encounter problems. If you get any questions about either of these courses please refer them to John or me.

If a student is having issues while trying to finish one of the quizzes please tell them to do what they can and then email me once their time has finished with details and ideally screenshots.

Any questions please let John or me know.

Wow – so fabulous to see the campus come to life with Welcome Day !  2024 is shaping up to be an exceptionally big and buzzy year, if today is anything to go by!!  Thanks to you all for warm welcomes and massive manaaki for our incoming (and returning) student cohorts – it’s so great to see.

Accolades also to you all for our go-live with FOLIO and MultiSearch on Monday!  It was an extraordinarily tight timeline for implementation, and while I never had an iota of doubt that a team of your calibre could bring it home, I appreciate the work needed was immense and the pressure never let up.  I’m so immensely proud of you all, of your positive and collaborative spirit, and of your support to each other through some of this project’s multitude of challenges.  You have been collectively nothing short of awe-inspiring.

I also appreciate there’s no let-up right now or time for a decent celebration, as we hurtle together into semester 1.  But we will do this, fulsomely and well, when we have time to draw breath!

Finally, I have some personal health news to share.  I’ve recently been diagnosed with breast cancer, and am in the midst of diagnostics (MRI, biopsies) at the moment, ahead of a treatment plan being decided upon.  It seems clear that surgery will be the first step, though timelines are yet to be confirmed.  Library managers and I have been working together closely to map out how we can best provide continuity and support during the days ahead.  This will be a bit of an evolving situation, as more information comes to hand including timelines for my absence.  For now, I’m here and feeling really well 😊
I’m also absolutely happy for you to share this news with other UC staff as/if it comes up – the more we all know, the better support we can provide each other.

Kat

ELS News

Kia ora koutou,

Here is a long and newsy sort of bulletin containing some goings on in ELS.

With our big recruitment phase coming to an end, we next need to turn our attention to the permanent selection of the Team Leader role that was Tomo and is being ably held under a fixed term by Isabella due to end on 3 March. Given the very tight timelines to complete a selection process before the end of the fixed term, and the other work we have on at the moment, I decided to seek a three-month extension to the fixed term for Isabella until 9 June 2024. As a consequence of this, we have also extended Roman’s fixed term (he is covering Isabella’s substantive role) through to the same date.

My thanks to both Isabella and Roman for agreeing to this extension.

Ishbel was on a fixed term filling Roman’s substantive role. With Ishbel being successful in gaining our continuing 37.5-hour role (which was Hugh’s), we will have a fixed-term vacancy of 30 hours per week available until 9 June 2024. This will be recruited via an internal Expression of Interest. A Counter-Culture and email to staff will be the next thing I write.

Monday is the beginning of the new academic year. That means we are back to our longer (normal) hours of opening in our PJH and EPS libraries (MB Library keeps standard hours throughout the year). I will circulate the opening hours on the Teams All Staff General channel.

This leads to a timely reminder about the reserved carpark spaces near PJH – the ones we have near Angus Tate. They are marked reserved for library staff only at all times. Their purpose is to allow members of my team who are coming in to work late nights through to 9 or 11 to have a shot at getting a park that is near to their work and doesn’t require them to walk a long distance back to their car at the end of their shifts. Especially as the nights draw in, it is important that these parks are only used by members of the team that need them. Please refrain if you are not working a late shift on the roster.
