Makerspace

As Lyndsay mentioned in her post on 6 September, our trial Makerspace opened on Monday 9 September. It is open Monday to Friday from 2-5pm and the trial will run until Thursday 14 November.

We are gradually adding resources to the Makerspace. If you want to know what is there already, check out the inventory at K:\LIBR-Library\Projects\Makerspace\2019-Makerspace\Makerspace-inventory, but also feel free to come and browse when the Makerspace is open.

Volunteers are still needed for the Makerspace shifts. It’s not an onerous task and you don’t need any special expertise. All you need to do is:

  • Check with your manager that it’s OK for you to volunteer for specific shifts
  • Put you name on the roster at K:\LIBR-Library\Projects\Makerspace\2019-Makerspace\Roster-September. (Rosters will be created for October and November as well)
  • Be a friendly, approachable presence
  • Ensure that at least one staff member remains in the Makerspace at all times and make sure that no resources leave the Makerspace without your authorisation
  • Encourage visitors to write their feedback on the easel near the door
  • Use the spreadsheet at K:\LIBR-Library\Projects\Makerspace\2019-Makerspace\Makerspace-statistics-September to keep a note of the number of visitors to the Makerspace during your shift, and to write any comments. You can use the PC in Room 214L, but remember to log out as soon as you have updated the spreadsheet. (Spreadsheets will be created for October and November)
  • For the 1:45pm shift, collect Key no. 33 from the key press in the level 2 Customer Services workroom and open the doors – prop them open with the chocks that are inside the doors to the left. Turn on the lights in the Makerspace and in the rooms on the right
  • If you are on the last shift for the day, ensure electrical equipment is switched off, turn out all the lights, close any windows, lock the main entrance to the Makerspace and return the key to the key press.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Expressions of Interest for Projects – 2 more

Kia ora koutou,

Mahi for 2018 that we need to get started on now:

Induction Project (was Orientation) In 2.3 on the Operational Plan: Design and Deliver targeted library induction for all international students and all students new to UC. This project will include introduction to Learn as well as other aspects of the Library’s services to new students. It will include services to students prior to their arrival/commencement of their programmes of study at UC. We all have a valuable contribution to make, building on what has been done previously to determine and provide our services for 2018.

Makerspace Project In 2.4 on the Operational Plan: Partner with appropriate students and staff to pilot UC Makerspace (collaborative learning environment). This project will include decisions about space location, content/technology, staff training, and liaison with library users (staff and students). It will also consider pop-ups and Makerspace days. It will take a research-based and pragmatic approach.

if you would like to be on the team for either of these projects, please email me (Lyndsay) by end of Thursday 16 November.
