Why I’m attending Diversity Week and why you should too!

Diversity Week is nearly upon us! All the excitement kicks off on Monday. We’ve heard through the grapevine that there’s a few students out there getting excited so today for our final piece from students on diversity at UC, we’ve asked Luke Gillespie and Dan Chan from the UCSA, to share with us their thoughts on the week ahead…

Luke
Diversity Week will mean something different for everyone.. go figure… we’re diverse! But for me personally, I see it as an opportunity to understand how we, as students, can act in a way that includes others, sees things from another’s point of view and how we can show respect for one another regardless of our differences in beliefs or backgrounds. Diversity Week gives all of us the opportunity to reflect and think about who we are and how we engage with others.

I’m attending Diversity Week because this is a week worth celebrating! It’s a time to truly acknowledge and thrive on difference. Too often we stick to what we know – but where’s the fun in that!? This is an opportunity to learn something new, meet someone new and discover something new. Ultimately Diversity Week is special, it’s a first of its kind and so are YOU – that in itself is worth celebrating!

Nĭ hăo! I’m Dan and here’s why I’m frothing over Diversity Week.

I like to compare diversity to a bag of lollies. Let’s be honest – when choosing what to buy, you’re always drawn to the good ol’ party mix because you know you’re going to get a range of different types and flavours which enhances your experience. The same goes for diversity. A more diverse campus means a more vibrant and interesting place and ultimately enriches the student experience.

Diversity Week is all about celebrating the range of diverse individuals and groups we have on campus. If you’re anything like me, and you love to eat, then you should all head down to the World Market at 11:30am on C-Block lawn next Wednesday! Many of our international clubs will be there to offer you culinary delights from around the world.

I will leave you all with words from one of my favourite artists, Macklemore – “I might not be the same, but that’s not important. No freedom ‘til we’re equal, damn right I support it!

Thanks Luke and Dan – see you next week!
