Recycling changes and Coffee Cup Composting

UC has made some changes to its recycling system – because, unfortunately, some types of plastic and packaging are no longer being accepted by UC’s end-point recyclers. So read the stickers on the bins before you recycle!

Some examples of items that now go in the red landfill bins:

  • sushi containers
  • plastic lids off single use takeaway cups
  • yoghurt and cardboard pottles
  • sandwich packs
  • cardboard pottles

This will be the new stickers you will see on the bins.

While it is a real shame that less items are being accepted by end-point recyclers, the Sustainability Office keeps trying to lessen the waste that goes to landfill. So on a happier note: the blue bin trial for coffee cup collection is going really well.

As you may know, these cups go to a special offsite composting unit, and last year over 15,000 cups were diverted from landfill and turned into compost. A massive effort! The aim is to divert 250,000+ from landfill if we get this right. So keep putting your coffee cups (no lids) in the blue bins!
