Kia ora, koutou! Nau mai, haere mai, ki Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori 2016!
This year, Māori Language Week – an annual campaign led by the Māori Language Commission – runs from the 4th – 10th July. As the week falls during the term holidays, the UC Libraries will be celebrating Te Wiki o te Reo Māori a little longer, with an extra week of activities for staff and students.
The theme for Te Wiki this year is “Ākina te Reo” – behind you all the way! It is about using Te Reo Māori to support people, to inspire and to cheer on.
Keep an eye out in all four of the UC libraries for an interactive art display – a korowai (cloak) where you can include your own feathers complete with a message of support and encouragement in the spirit of this year’s theme. Both Education and Central Libraries are holding Wharewhare sessions (Bingo!) and Central Library will also be holding a Storytime session for the Early Childhood Education Centre children – feel free to bring along your younger whānau members for storytime.
All UC Libraries will be showing their aroha for te reo Māori, with displays going up and new kupu to learn. And the learning doesn’t stop there – you can find “Te Kupu o te Wiki” on display at all UC Libraries with new kupu going up every week of the year, so you can keep the reo going! Tau kē!
Check out the Te Wiki o te Reo Māori programme, which also includes info on where to collect free resource packs for all staff and students.
Events at the UC Libraries
‘Tōku reo, tōku ohooho’ – My language, my awakening.

- Wharewhare at UC Central Library: Tuesday 12 July, 2-3pm.
Esteemed lecturer and coordinator of Te Hōaka Pounamu – Te Hurinui Clarke will be presenting a daily dose of te reo Māori tutorage for the listeners at Te Reo Irirangi o Hokonui ki Hakatere.
The morning breakfast show will be promoting te reo Māori throughout Māori Language Week and will touch upon a variety of interesting topics for how and when to use the language.
Te Hurinui Clarke, who lectures at UC, has an extensive knowledge base of te reo Māori me ōna Tikanga (language customs). He lectures completely in te reo Māori and has specialised knowledge in second language acquisition and mātauranga Māori (Māori epistemology).
Te Hurinui has an infectious sense of humour that makes him a favourite amongst his students within the education department.
Make sure to be listening every morning at 8 am for a great show.

Winterlude marks half of the academic year whizzing past us, and this year it also marks the Super 15 season coming to an end.
This Winterlude Cantabs bring you Crusaders vs Hurricanes on 16 July. It is the last guaranteed home match for the boys in red and black, and the Crusaders have been having an absolute cracker of a season so it’s sure to be an epic match-up.
Cantabs have put together all your must-haves to charge on AMI in one convenient little package. Everything will be going down at the Foundry from 3pm. There is going to be plenty happening to get you Bank stand ready. There will be Cantabs overalls with stenciling and customisation facilities, as well as face painting, and The Foundry will be putting on a few food and drink specials to keep morale and energy levels high. Complementary buses leaving the foundry at 4pm for ticket holders.
During the week before game day the Cantabs will be on campus with a few chances for you to score a double pass to the Cantabs Pre-match and the game. At the Pre-match Cantabs will have spot prizes to those who make the extra effort with their attire (helpful hint: if you’re in red and black, you’re on the right track).
This event isn’t just about the game being played, it’s also about being part of a student community and being a Cantabrian – and we all know Rugby is the heart of the south. This game is a chance to snap an excellent selfie, hashtag your heart out, throw some chat around, and get out and about as a Canterbury student and see some Canterbury sport.
Give Cantabs a Like on Facebook and we will make sure all the info about what is happening and when it’s happening is posted up on the book https://www.facebook.com/cantabs/.
Tickets are available on Dash now!
