  • Academic support
  • Māori Students’ study centres.

Here MDT round up the first big event on the calendar – Māori Orientation.

Last week under the bright sun, we welcomed over 100 new Māori students to the beginning of their career here at UC. Connections were made, stories were exchanged and kai was consumed, all in a day to celebrate new opportunities, challenges and friends. From the perspective of a Tuakana (student leader), the atmosphere was warm like the weather, which meant students spent little time settling in.

Activities included a mihi whakatau, to formally introduce the prospective Māori students, which then flowed through to the first kai of the day. Shortly after, the students, assisted by Tuākana, set out on an Amazing Race which saw them exploring all corners of the University Campus. Obstacles were apparent, however were no match for the innate “Māori ingenuity” shown by the future Māori academics, ka pai!

The day was rounded out by an amazing kai put on by our fine friends at The Foundry, by the time this were over, everyone was feeling welcome. It is our hope that those who participated in the day enjoyed themselves thoroughly and make their home here at the University of Canterbury.
