Students turn out in force for Big Give

On Saturday 4th March, the Student Volunteer Army started the year off with a bang, carrying out our biggest event since the initial quakes – the SVA Big Give. Around 750 students, UC staff, community members and politicians, including the Mayor of Christchurch Lianne Dalziel, all got stuck in for a day of volunteering at the coastal spit reserve in Southshore.

We gave the reserve a big tidy up – spreading mulch over 1.5km of walking track, cleaning up the surrounding coastline, removing invasive weed species and building a new picnic table area which will serve as a monument marking the work of the SVA. After the volunteering wrapped up we had a chance to relax in the sun enjoying the music of Mako Road and a free bbq lunch.

The SVA would like to sincerely thank all those who made the event possible, especially our amazing volunteers for their hard work on the day! The success of the Big Give 2017, has ensured the event will be a staple of the University O’Week calendar for years to come!
