In her final blog for Insider’s Guide Kara outlines how GradFest has helped her to prepare for media interest.
Even in the age of social media, traditional journalism can still be a very good way to tell the public about your research. In today’s GradFest session on the media, UC Senior Lecturer Tara Ross explained how we as postgraduates can help our research profile by engaging with journalists.
They like to cover stories on interesting topics that affect readers’ lives. Whether you’re doing research in the sciences or another area, you might want the public to know about it. Of course, you need to be cautious because you cannot control information once it goes public, but it is an opportunity for you to share your knowledge with the public. It can also help your academic career by showing your wider impact in society.
One of the most helpful things to practice is summarising your important points so you can communicate clearly to a journalist. We don’t have to be afraid of the media as long as we’re prepared.
