Staying physically healthy and well is key to your success at university – it will help you:
- manage your stress levels
- sleep better
- improve your concentration and retention (better grades anyone?)
- generally feel good about yourself (and we all want that!)
The Rec & Sport team offer a multitude of health, fitness and sport activities that you can choose from to take your wellness through the roof.
Step 1 – Sign up for your UCRecCentre membership online at www.canterbury.ac.nz/ucreccentre
By paying the Student Services Levy you are provided with access to the gym, and most classes are at no extra cost if you are registered with the RecCentre. Some classes require an additional charge to be paid.
Step 2 – Have a good browse through our website once you’ve signed up. We offer a huge range of activities and we’re sure you’ll find something that floats your boat. You could drop-in and play badminton, squash or shoot hoops, or sign up for a social sport team.

- a climbing wall
- and even a ZenZone, where you can find quiet time and maybe take a little nap to refresh yourself.
We have an extensive group fitness programme, including Zumba, Yoga, HIIT and Pump, to name just a few. Super fun, and over before you know it! Remember – if you choose activities that you enjoy, be it solo or with friends/in a group, and you’re more likely to keep at it.
Step 3 – Pop down and explore the RecCentre. We need to take your photo to activate your membership anyway, so come in as soon as you can and we’ll get it done. Then you can get on with having fun in the RecCentre.
As soon as you have your Student ID card, you can sign up online and start using the RecCentre. Your Student ID card becomes your membership card, so you’ll need it to gain access to the building – bring it every time.
