Offshore international online students – study plan for 2022

Greetings from the UC International Relationships Office! We hope you are enjoying online learning with UC this semester!

This message is to provide you with an update on the New Zealand border situation, and allow you start planning for 2022.

Unfortunately it’s highly unlikely the NZ border will open before February 2022, and Immigration New Zealand continues to pause the processing of offshore visa applications. This pause currently remains in place until February 2022. As a result, you will not be able to arrive in New Zealand in time to study on campus in February 2022. Please check this link for more details released by Education New Zealand, including FAQs.

We appreciate this is not the news you were hoping to hear and we are very sorry for the ongoing uncertainty this pandemic presents. We note the NZ government continues to review our current border settings, and any updates affecting when you can arrive in NZ will be communicated to you. In the meantime we are here to support you however we can, whether you wish to defer for a semester (or longer) in order to continue your UC studies in person once borders re-open, or whether you wish to continue with online learning in semester one, 2022.

We suggest that you contact your student advisor team to work out the best study plan for you, before making any decision. It’s really important that you work with your faculty on a study plan, so that you stay on track with your studies.

After consulting with your student advisor team, please follow one of the following steps:

  • If you would like to defer your UC study to July 2022 or February 2023 intake, please email iro@canterbury.ac.nz
  • If you would like to continue to study online, and have discussed available online courses with your student advisors for S1, 2022, please apply to enrol through myUC. More information on how to enrol as an online student is available here

We look forward to hearing from you regarding your study plans for 2022, and hope to welcome you to Aotearoa New Zealand in the near future!

Please visit UC’s wepage here for information about New Zealand’s latest border exception cohort.

We are hopeful that travel restrictions will ease soon and that we can be welcoming you back onto campus. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to UC’s International Support team for ongoing support with your online learning.

If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to  email iro@canterbury.ac.nz.

Ngā mihi,
International Relationships Office
