Use your loaf: free bread on offer

Twenty million loaves of bread are thrown away every year in New Zealand. That means that every hour, 2,283 loaves are being chucked away.

It’s hard to believe and even harder to visualise, so come along to the Undercroft on Wednesday 18 October to watch as ENSOC students attempt to build a pyramid out of 2,283 loaves of bread.

To add to the pressure, they will be building the pyramid LIVE on Breakfast TV (6am – 9am).

While you’re there, you can make yourself a meal in a mug and learn how reducing your food waste can save money. Celebrity chef Jax Hamilton will be on hand to share her tips for using bread.

Of course we don’t want the bread to go to waste, so you will be able to grab yourself a loaf to take home.

With the help of the Student Volunteer Army the bread will also be distributed to local schools as well as delivered to the Community Fridge in New Brighton for members of the public to take.

If you love food and hate waste then join us 7am – 10am Wednesday 18 October in the Undercroft.

Fun day for tamariki 5 October – “What’s in our waterways?”

The CAREX team are hosting a Tamariki day in conjunction with Te Taumutu Rūnunga at one of our waterway research and demonstration sites in Springston, on Thursday October 5th (10am – 2pm).

The theme of the day is “What’s in our waterways?” and the tamariki will have the opportunity to be freshwater explorers and scientists for the day. Staff from our CAREX team (www.carex.org.nz) and postgraduates from the Freshwater Ecology Research Group in the School of Biological Sciences will lead the activities, including water quality monitoring, freshwater bug and fish identification, and a scavenger hunt through the wetland at the top of the waterway in the morning. In the afternoon, we will learn to weave harakeke/flax with Liz Brown (UC AVC Māori), with whom we have co-developed this outreach day.

Jef Neve Spirit Control on tour

Jef Neve Spirit Control on tour

It’s not everyday in Christchurch that you have the opportunity to experience world class jazz music. However, this October you get the opportunity to indulge in world-class live music when NCRE hosts Jef Neve and The Piano.

In recent years, Jef Neve has grown into one of Belgium’s most famous jazz musicians. His album Spirit Control got to the top 10 of the Belgian pop chart in the first week of its release – unheard of for a jazz artist. But is it still jazz? And if so, does it matter?

Neve is someone who does not think in boxes, and approaches each project with an open mind, which has resulted in exciting collaborations that cannot be captured in one genre. From Toots Thielemans to Jonathan Jeremiah, José James to Jamie Cullum, and  Dutch rapper Typhoon to Gabriel Rios and Kobe Proesmans, every time the exchange of ideas has produced musical fireworks.

This time round, there is a remarkable duet with American pop musician Sam Sparro called Caterpillar. Again, not an obvious combination, but you can hear both artists almost literally step out of their comfort zones and (maybe for that very reason) create a result that is as surprising as it is successful. “I like a taste of everything, and it’s not in my nature to rule out any cooperation in advance. I’m open to experimentation. Often it’s the very thing that enriches my music” says Neve.

As Mary James of the London Jazz News describes, “Neve writes beautiful tunes that hang around in your head and send you back to replay this album again and again, so satisfying is his virtuosity and eloquency of feeling. This is a truly beautiful personal album of many layers and subtle colours from the master of emotional intensity truly at ease with himself.”

Jef Neve will be bringing music from his new album, Spirit Control, to The Piano on Thursday 12 October at 8pm. Tickets can be purchased via Eventfinder here>
