5 shows you need to binge watch right now

1. Orphan Black:

  • Genre: science fiction, conspiracy thriller
  • I have fallen in love with this show, and am already onto season three. The series focuses on Sarah Manning, an outsider and orphan whose life changes dramatically after witnessing the suicide of a woman who looks just like her. Sarah assumes the dead woman’s identity as a policewoman, claiming her boyfriend and her bank account. But instead of solving her problems, Sarah is introduced to a world of mystery when she discovers that she and the dead woman are clones. Her next question is: are they the only ones?

2. Parks and Recreation:

  • Genre: comedy
  • This show is just perfect when I need to chill out and take a study break. I’m only on the second season, but this show has been around for a while so there are seven seasons altogether. Amy Poehler plays the hilarious overachiever Leslie Knope, the deputy director of the Parks and Recreation Department in the fictional town of Pawnee. The show focuses on the absurd antics of Leslie and her colleagues as they attempt to execute random projects, in an effort to make their city a better place.

3. That ’70s Show

  • Genre: sitcom/comedy
  • This one’s an oldie but a goodie! It’s constantly replaying on TV so I’ve watched all eight seasons a bunch of times. But if you somehow haven’t heard of it here’s the lowdown: the show focuses on a group of teenagers from Wisconsin while they are living out their high school years in the golden period of 1976-1979. The majority of the show takes place in main character Eric’s basement, where the gang all hang out. Interestingly enough Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher, who are now married, play love interests on the show!

4. RuPaul’s Drag Race

  • Genre: reality competition/trashy TV
  • If you’re looking for something to zone out to during your down time this might be the show for you! Everything in this series is taken to the extreme: the personalities, the costumes and the challenges.  Actor and drag queen RuPaul hosts the competition and mentors people as they compete for the title of ‘America’s next drag superstar’. There are mini challenges in each episode, and a main challenge which can be either individual or group focused. The winner of the challenges are granted immunity so they can remain in the running, and they also receive prizes for their win. But who will win overall?

5. Pretty Little Liars:

  • Genre: drama, mystery thriller
  • This show of six seasons is loosely based around a book series of the same title.  Set in the fictional town of Rosewood, Pennsylvania, the series follows the lives of four friends whose high school clique falls to pieces after the disappearance of their leader, Alison. A year after Alison disappears the friends are reunited once again when they all begin receiving messages from a mysterious person named “A”. The unknown “A” threatens to expose the girls’ deepest secrets, including the ones they were sure that only Alison knew. At first, the group think it’s Alison herself, but after her body is found the girls realize that someone else is plotting to ruin their perfect lives….

5 Places to Eat and Drink in Christchurch

Lately I’ve been to some really awesome restaurants, cafes and bars in Christchurch, so I thought I’d spread the word about a few of my faves…

  1. C1 Expresso – Chch Central
This cafe has a really cool vibe, and is open until 10pm so it’s great for an evening catch up with friends. One of the coolest elements of this cafe is that certain things on the menu can be sent in tubes which go along the roof to the tables! They also serve lamingtons, with syringes full of jam or custard- so you can inject your own filling. I’d definitely suggest trying this place out! You could even head to ‘Alice in Videoland’ right next door to catch a film.
  2. The Astro Lounge – Chch Central
This restaurant right across from the Arts Centre provides the perfect causal outdoor dining experience, even in the colder months – as they have a covered outdoor section with burners to keep you toasty! I went there the other week for a nice dinner with a friend and we shared a $40 platter – which I thought was really good value for how much food I got for my $20! They also have yummy desserts which I’ll have to try next time…
  3. Addington Coffee Co-op – Lincoln Rd
I love going to this cafe for a weekend brunch, or just a coffee. I have a bit of a sweet tooth so I’d recommend either the waffles or the french toast. The cafe is formed around the values of fair and ethical business. 70% of their profits are given back to the local community, as well as to some of the producers and communities overseas that create the products they sell. Additionally many of the products they use are fairtrade and organic- so you know the food is coming from a good place!
  4. CBD Bar – Chch Central
This restaurant/bar on Madras St is open from breakfast till dinner time, so it gives you multiple dining options! My favourite thing on the menu to share with friends are their delicious wood-fired pizzas, and the roasted potatoes are a moreish side. If you go there for dinner or an evening drink you may even be able to catch a live band. They also have a great beer selection from their very own brewery – if that’s your thang.
  5. The Shroom Room – Lyttleton
As for those who have been requesting vegan and vegetarian recipes on the blog, this cafe will be right up your alley! This is a strictly vegetarian cafe, however many of their options can be made vegan and they are very accommodating. Plus the food is amazing! It’s worth heading over to Lyttleton just to go to the cafe, but you may as well make a day out of it and go when there’s a community market, or to have a look around the town.
