Riccarton High School wins Physics Tournament at UC

Riccarton High School has won the Canterbury section of the International Young Physicists’ Tournament. The event was hosted by the University of Canterbury’s College of Science, the Physics and Astronomy Department and the Electric Power Engineering Centre.

Riccarton students Fredy Youssif, Nicholas Lam and Aiden Yan won first place with a score of 111.6, beating runners-up Christchurch Girls High School by 5.7 points.

Professor Mike Reid, HOD of Physics and Chemistry, presented prizes and medals to the students. All three of the students plan to study engineering at UC next year.

The students are now preparing for the national stage of the tournament in Wellington on March 21. The international final will be held in Nakhon Ratchasima in Thailand at the end of June. Read more about the tournament here.

UC stars of the Christchurch Urban Astronomers Society

Two amazing UC students Ryan Ridden-Harper and Toby Hendy played a significant role in the development of the Christchurch Urban Astronomers Society. The society allows them to expand their interest of astronomy and share their passion with others from the Canterbury region. Both students study physics and mathematics at UC.

Ryan and Toby had their story published on UC’s news site and in Chronicle.
