Mid-Year International Welcome – Review

To welcome all the new international students to UC, as always there was an international welcome.

About 200 new students, both full time and study abroad students were welcomed at the A1 lecture theatre with a speech by UC’s Chancellor Dr John Wood, he left behind some business cards for students to contact him if all else fails. He does it very year but no one has ever had the courage to pick one up to date!

The event continued on to ice breaking activities in groups led by a solid team of roughly 15 student mentors. This year’s key activity was to design an All Blacks jersey on a plain white shirt! (See the irony?)

All went well in spite of operating under wet weather plans and as always everyone ended up having a great time and got to know people a little better or meet new people entirely.

Take a look at pictures from the event here.

Restaurant review: Mexico

A refreshing pineapple and vanilla Agua Fresca
A refreshing pineapple and vanilla Agua Fresca

Walking into this place is like arriving in Mexico (or so I’d imagine). It’s walls are completely adorned with unusual picture frames and Aztec decor. It’s uniquely Mexican.

My pineapple and vanilla drink (pictured above) was scrumptious, and if you’re of age then there’s a wide variety of tequilas, margaritas and sangrias too.

The food came pretty quickly which is a huge tick in my book. I ordered the chicken in a mole poblano quesadilla with coriander, garlic chips and a blackened onion crema dip. It was super tasty and filling too as you get eight quesadilla ‘wedges’. The highlight was the dip which was especially yummy, but the lowlight was the lack of coriander in my quesadillas – just a few leaves here and there. But I had great fun trying the four hot sauces on the table!

Mexico is a great venue for big group dinners. The food is easily shared so you can try a bit of everything. More importantly, the food is also very reasonably priced. My quesadilla was only $15 and it was quite a substantial meal, so great value.

I also indulged in a dessert – deconstructed lime curd vanilla cheesecake. Yum! I definitely recommend. This came in at $10, which I’d happily pay for a satisfying pudding.

Review: The Avengers 2: Age of Ultron

No matter who wins or loses, trouble always comes around…
-Nick Fury

The latest Marvel blockbuster has arrived, The Avengers 2: Age of Ultron. This time we get a lot more personal with the Avengers in the midst of an Earth-threatening event that challenges the team, bringing into question their philosophies, ethics and loyalty to each other.

The film cleverly questions the legitimacy of artificial intelligence in an increasingly technology-driven world, whilst tying in more relatable personal issues of love, friendship and belonging.

We discover some well kept secrets, including which Avenger has a spouse and kids, as well as a developing spark between two Avengers…

We also meet some new characters who bring skills and abilities un-matched by the Avengers’ talents. This all leads to a bittersweet end where we say goodbye to some (forever?) and look to the new future of the Avengers.

Overall, I’d rate the film a solid four out of five stars. It’s a really enjoyable watch that’s full of action and excitement but with a little bit of thinking involved too. It’s sure to satisfy all Marvel fans!

If you’re new to the Marvel franchise, I recommend you watch the main Marvel movies before jumping in with the latest installment. These are the kind of movies that assume you know the back story, but the good news is that Marvel movies are actually really cool so you should watch them!

One thing you need to know: always watch till the end of the credits as there’s always an added extra! You can Google the order you should watch them in, there are heaps of lists online, but I’d recommend you watch the main films, in this order:

1. Captain America: The First Avenger
2. Iron Man
3. The Incredible Hulk
4. Iron Man 2
5. Thor
6. The Avengers
7. Iron Man 3
8. Thor: The Dark World
9. Captain America: The Winter Soldier
10. The Avengers 2: Age of Ultron
