A past recipient shares what the Rhodes scholarship means to him..

Hamish Tomlinson – UC Rhodes Scholar 2014 at Keble College

First of all it is a huge honour to be a Rhodes Scholar, joining a list that contains some very special people from New Zealand, and also the rest of the world.

To me, being a Rhodes Scholar comes with a responsibility to uphold the values of the Rhodes scholarship, both during and after my time in Oxford. I would hope that I can apply myself to a pursuit that “fights the world’s fight” in the spirit of the scholarship.

For example, I am studying biomedical engineering, in which I hope to further medical knowledge and technology.

But fundamentally the Rhodes scholarship provides the opportunity and the financial support to study in Oxford, one of the top Universities in the world, which I feel extremely privileged and lucky to be able to do.
