For those who are new to cycling at UC, or haven’t heard of this before, Dr Bike is a free fix-it clinic for bike issues available to both staff and students, funded by the Sustainability Office. This service provides basic maintenance and repairs such as puncture repairs, tuning of brakes and oiling chains.
This semester, we are running extended Dr Bike sessions, to help you get your bike ready for the year ahead. You’ll find Olly and Kieran on C Block Lawn, every Tuesday from 12.00pm – 1.30pm during term time. Come past, say hi, and get your bike looked at while you’re there!
If you’re interested in seeing how Dr Bike fits into the bigger picture about planning for cyclists at UC, you might like to look at the UC Cycle Plan 2014-2022.
Keep an eye out for these guys on Tuesdays!

Twenty million loaves of bread are thrown away every year in New Zealand. That means that every hour, 2,283 loaves are being chucked away.
It’s hard to believe and even harder to visualise, so come along to the Undercroft on Wednesday 18 October to watch as ENSOC students attempt to build a pyramid out of 2,283 loaves of bread.
To add to the pressure, they will be building the pyramid LIVE on Breakfast TV (6am – 9am).
While you’re there, you can make yourself a meal in a mug and learn how reducing your food waste can save money. Celebrity chef Jax Hamilton will be on hand to share her tips for using bread.
Of course we don’t want the bread to go to waste, so you will be able to grab yourself a loaf to take home.
With the help of the Student Volunteer Army the bread will also be distributed to local schools as well as delivered to the Community Fridge in New Brighton for members of the public to take.
If you love food and hate waste then join us 7am – 10am Wednesday 18 October in the Undercroft.
For the first time in 3 years, the Sustainability Office will host the UC Sustainability Awards. The awards recognise the efforts of our University community to improve the world around us. This can be through research projects, community initiatives, departmental resource efficiency, leadership, or anything else that demonstrates a willingness and ability to make our place that bit greener.
Nominate a mate or staff member now
Know someone at UC doing great things for sustainability? Nominate them for a Sustainability Award now.
Nominations can be for:
- Student or staff research projects
- Resource efficiency initiatives
- Community involvement
- Other initiatives
Nominations are open from 1 August – 31 August. Download the form here.
Holding these awards is important because not only does it recognise people for work that otherwise often goes unnoticed, but it also raises the profile of sustainability activities in our community and demonstrates just how much of this great work is happening here.
The winners will be selected by an independent judging panel, made up of sustainability professionals outside of the university, and a representative from the UCSA.
The awards ceremony is held at the conclusion of our annual UC Eco Week on Friday 23 September 2016, from 5.30pm – 6.30pm in Undercroft 101. The Awards will be presented by the UCSA President James Addington.
